Not checked this accurately before, but had to truck down to Isle of Wight last week. It was exactly 300.5 miles round trip, with a real mix of motorway, A-roads, B-roads, crowded towns, ring-roads.
On the way there we were two-up, but on the way back there was a heavy lump of machine in the back, plus tooling and our overnight stuff.
The on-board instrument reckoned I was getting about 61m.p.g., though I took that with a pinch of salt. On getting home I filled up again (same garage and pump I'd filled at before we left), and that showed a true figure of just over 53m.p.g.
I'm not saying it couldn't be improved on, but considering the mix of roads and traffic conditions I reckon it's not bad.
