Cleaning the fuel filter housing - 2.0 HDi

Hi

I'm changing my fuel filter tomorrow and thinking ahead to cleaning the housing body, haynes manual mention the housing 'must be cleaned in a solvent bath using injector test fluid, paraffin or similar' and also mentions the use of 'Resistel cleaning cloths'.

Is this all necessary and is there an alternative to these cloths that google seems to have no knowledge of except other forum posters asking the same questions?

I have that Haynes Manual. Personally I think they are talking out of their rear end !!!...... When I was in the trade we never used such fineries as specialist cleaning cloths. Any lint free material should be fine, quick swill out with diesel which is cheaper than paraffin these days and away you go. Just have a close up look inside the housing to see that no debris or metallic bits are left behind.... Little tip, partly fill the housing with clean diesel before placing the new filter back in. This saves a lot of hand pumping with the priming bulb. If you have the Siemens system it is well worth investing in the tool which is avaialable from Machine Mart for under £20.00 and saves damageing the housing...

Thanks Andy, I'll just purchase a lint-free cloth then.

I've got a container of injector cleaner to fill the filter with (it's meant to go in the new filter). I have got a Siemens injection pump but it looks like someone's already had a good go at the housing lid. I know about the tool but can't bring myself to spend that much, couldn't even bring myself to buy a £10 flywheel locking tool, so made something up. I'll try using my oil filter clamp first (not the chain type) and think about tools if that fails!

No need to buy cloths, old tee shirt or cotton material etc will do. Filter spanner may seem expensive but compared to the price of a replacement filter housing is relatively cheap and is always there for next time...... I tried with oil filter clamp and failed.

Used my oil filter remover today and it came off fine but I assume it's been taken off before or perhaps it wasn't on tight enough? I did it a little tighter when I replaced the filter.

Bought a set of 4 microfibre + lint free cloths from ASDA for £1 in the end, didn't have any rags or t-shirts to waste and I had to clean the little metal bits out of the bottom of the filter housing.
