[Engine] Cold Start Adjustment
#1
I'm trying to get the cold start on my 1.9 DW8 working properly. It was adjusted so that the engine was running at 1100 rpm. The knurled cable adjuster is pretty much rusted up tight and when I try to turn it the bracket starts to bend. I slackened off the nipple and put some slack into the cable. Now the cold start doesn't seemto work. It starts and idles at about 750 rpm picking up to 800 when the engine is warm.

How much slack shoud be in the cable and where does it go to? What is at the other end of the cable to pull it to make the cold start work?

Thanks
Malc

When the engine is cold there shoud not be any slack. When it warms up the thermostatic sensor located in the cooling system expands, the cable slackens and reduces the idle speed. My (xud) sensor is located in the thermostat housing. I think ? that yours (dw) is either in the fuel filter housing or the thermostat area. It dosen't seem to be working, try adjusting it when cold. They can be replaced.

Thanks. The cable was tight at all times before I fiddled and the idle speed never varied from 1100rpm.

So I managed to unfreeze the cable adjustment and adjusted it when the engine was just about cold for 1100rpm. The today (it's quite cold) I start the engine and it idles at 800 rpm. When I get to work 35 miles later it's idling at 1100 rpm. So the bloody thing is working backwards. Help!!

Does anyone know of a Citroen/Peugeot specialist in Gloucester?

This must be a fairly common failure. I got the cold start mechanism out of a scrapped Berlingo and it doesn't move either. I stuck the temperature sensor in hot water for 10 minutes and the cable didn't move. Then I stuck it in the freezer for half an hour and it still didn't move.
Does anyone know the part number so I can order a new one please?

I've just seen the cost of one on Ebay. Feckity, feckity, feck £235!!!!. No wonder they don't get repaired. Maybe I'll fit a choke cable.
