Fuel filter change - step by step
#1
Hi,

Today I did my first mini service on my 1.9D 2002 MK1 berlingo van, changing the oil, oil filter and air filter.

As the air filter was in a right old state I'm now thinking about changing the fuel filter.

Does anyone have a step by step guide with pictures on how to change the fuel filter?

Thanks

Rob

I think it has a type of cable tie fixing. If so,unclip, replace filter, top up with diesel to save wrist ache later, fit top & bleed through.Sometimes when I have filled the housing brim full, they start without the need to bleed.

Great, thanks Ron.
How easy is it to bleed? If doesn't start.

Easy peasy. There is a bulb or a plunger which you pump until it's hard (ooer). Once there is resistance on the bulb then start the engine. Repeat as necessary until the engine runs. You may need to pump the thing whilst the engine is running if it splutters.

Right, I've changed the fuel filter using a Hengst filter and it starts and drives fine BUT the old one was in the housing differently...the old one had the odd shaped seal facing up but when I tried to replace it with the new one facing the same way it was very very tight so I flipped it so the writing and round surface was facing up and it went straight in.

The housing leaked from the top so I fiddled with the rubber seal and tighten up by hand, all seems good.

I know the previous owner did his own servicing. Who has fitted the filter wrong me or him?

Did you check all old seals / o-rings were removed from the housing?

Yeah, nothing left in the the housing apart from diesel.
