Immobiliser problem?
#1
My Berlingo 2005 would not start from time to time and now it does not start at all. (starter turns, but does not take) My garage told me it was the key and behold, the spare key worked.

After a day, the spare key also failed to start the car. I now deduct it was not the key but sheer luck the car started with the spare key.

I personally think it is the immobiliser that that stays on, preventing the car from starting.

I have read that the receiver ring can be the problem. Is this part testable with a normal multi-meter and can I buy a new / second hand one without having to get it re-programmed?

Any one here know what the part-number of the ring is so I can get a price for it?

The transpnder (key detector) is just a coil of wire which can be checked using a resistance checker etc.
The coil unit it's self can be changed with no programming and just clips over the ignition switch.
If you PM me your Vin No. I'll dig out the part No.
I managed to get a new one off ebay for less than a tenner.
I'll let you know what resistance the coil should be when I can get to mine.

Mine measures 21.4 ohm, so that looks good. Don't think its the coil itself.

When I insert (and turn) the key the car stays in Eco-Mode. Is that an indication the immobilizer is still engaged?

Anything else I can measure with a simple multi-meter?

Eco mode will stay on until it detects that the engine is running. (think it looks for the alternator generating)
This Has no effect on the imobiliser.
Do a Bsi shut down procedure (see link) then under the steering wheel where all the control stalks are, check the connections. Take them out and replace. They are held in by a clip so don't force them.
Make sure you do the shutdown as you will be disconnecting the air bag.
Do the start up procedure when you've finished.
Let us know how you get on. Confusedalut:

I have read the instructions, but what are the 'side lights'?

Disconnected and reconnected the battery as indicated, turned on / off the lights and tried to start the car. Same outcome. Starter turns but engine does not take.

Checked all the connectors and they all seem to be in properly.

Any other suggestions or is my only hope the dealer?

Did you take the connectors out from the the steering wheel unit & replace?
Does your central locking work off the key fob?

I did indeed. Took them all out and refitted them. Central locking is working from fob.

Check your connections on the injector pump.
Are you getting any smoke/fumes when cranking?
Have you run out of fuel recently or are low on fuel?
Are there any signs of air bubbles in the clear plastic pipe from the fuel filter?
When was the fuel filter last changed?
This is of course you have a diesel as we don't know what your driving.
