Don't forget from January this year, not only is the towbar assembly an MOT item, but so are the electrics.
If it's on the vehicle, it must be working.

FWIW, I tow a Bailey Ranger GT60 420/2 with my 2009 XTR. I gave up worrying about the noseweight, couldn't get it down to 55kg, just loaded the van sensibly. I have a Thule detachable towing hitch fitted.
Outfit tows fine, so far as I can tell.
Not too much deflection of rear suspension, as shown here.
