Full Version: Channel Tunnel and Ferry Height Restrictions

Hello,

I've just taken delivery of my brand new Xtr and love it. We have already planned a trip to the South of France at the end of July and organised this to travel in my previous car. We are travelling to France on a P&o ferry and returning on the Channel Tunnel.

Since taking delivery of our Berlingo I have discovered that the height of the vehicle is 1.867m but the height restriction on the channel tunnel is 1.85m and, even worse, 1.8m on the ferry we have booked.

Is it worth just arriving on the day and hoping that there is a margin of error or should I risk upgrading my bookings to a larger sized vehicle?

Has anybody had experience of either of these methods of crossing the channel in a new Xtr and if so, we're you ok?

I regularly take the ferry to France, using P&O. If you use their website and get two quotes, firstly for a 'normal' height car, then for a car giving the true height, I always find it comes to the same price. You'll probably be ok with your existing booking but for peace of mind you could contact your ferry company to check.

I have had to do the same for Harwich to Hook ferry.
Original quote was for 1.8m, had to change it to accommodate roof box.
Came back as exactly the same price. :thumbsup:
Before the others posted I was going to say take a footpump with you and let down the tyres to bare minimum and pump up on the other side but it seems you will be ok anyway. Have a good trip.
We are taking the XTR over on the tunnel this year, we just booked "with roof box" and the cost was the same.
Height does not appear to affect tunnel prices but it doe control whether you go in a single deck or a double deck carriage.

You don't need to, it simply is not an issue either on ferry or tunnel.

The tunnel charges no more to travel in the single deck high space carriage & I find this a better experience & you usually get off a bit quicker. Book your car as 'car with roofbox or bikes'.

However it will fit no problem into double deck carriage & at busy periods you might be directed into this anyway as sensor puts you at below 1.85. Fold your aerial flat as poss though to avoid hitting height barrier.

HI we go to France regularly to shop and we have a 2012 1.6 XTR, no problem in the tunnel - also went with P and O, samo, no probs at all,
