BLINKIN' FOG LIGHTS
#1
I can't help noticing that more and more cars have one front foglight that blinks on and off when they are turning a corner ( if they turn left, the left fog light blinks etc. ) ! It seems it only happens when the fog lights are not switched on. Anyone noticed this ? Is it faulty electrics ? Any clues / answers ??? Confusedcratch:

Dodgy earths I should think. Thats normally the cause of light related faults. Fog lights are normally mounted low enough to catch all the crap off the road thrown up by the wheels. The crud never dries in winter and allows all sorts of electrickery. The other issue is cars with multiplex wiring and mixes of leds and non leds. Dependent on the circuit the loads need to be balanced symmetrically, if a lamp fails this can cause a fault on the opposite side. Not forgetting my 'other' motor with auto lights that eats lamps like they're going out of fashion, needless to say the auto mode is now my right thumb and forefinger.

Have a google for "Volkswagen Static cornering lights".

That should explain it. I'm sure there are other manufacturers with them fitted, but I've only seen it on VWs. A friend of mine took her 10 plate Touran back because the foglights kept coming on .... the dealer (in Slough) wasn't even aware of the system!

Well bugger me what a waste of time. It is getting bloody stupid with lights these days. Idiots who drive with fogs on all the time, idiots who cant differentiate between light and dark so use no lights or just sidelights. Then theres the drl's that are blinding, the permanently stuck on brake lights or the motors that have lamps out all over the place. I'm sure there are very few people that actually check their lights and even less that actually have a spare lamp or the ability to change it.

I concur. By the way, noticed you were attacked by a conservatory, must have been a shattering experience.

These 'turning' lights are not something new.
I remember I worked with someone in the late 70's who had a Citroen (can't remember which model, but it was a 5-door hatchback) and his headlights turned partially left and right according to whichever way he was turning.
Then,40 years later VW come up with a brilliant innovative idea!
I think not Wink

Even Rolls-Royce in the 60's fitted their fog lights with a yellow bulb a'la France which were also used as indicators.

It was the DS that had the turning headlights - a beautiful car if ever there was one.

I had those fog lamps on a Seat in Spain the year before last and found them very disconcerting, I couldn't get used to them and found them to be more hindrance than help by distracting me

I think you will find the Skoda Yeti has this feature as standard.
