Hello again...desperate to fix this clutch to get through Christmas order deliveries....2003 Berlingo 1.9 D
PROBLEM: Clutch pedal acts like something lets go half way through clutch engagement accompanied by a ratchet sound. Remains down close to the floor...clutch still works and gears shift but clutch engagement is right off the floor = very little clutch pedal travel. Use foot to flip it back and it "resets" for a bit then lets go again.
WHAT I HAVE GLEANED FROM FORUMS: Yes the clutch is probably very worn, release bearing also but not making noise. Automatic adjuster seems to be the likely culprit and I just need a few more weeks-miles out of her before considering the whole clutch job...my wife makes the deliveries and is completely horrified of the happenings while in traffic, worried about an accident. I have cable out and here are my questions;
-1) Is the adjuster the longish cylinder just below the grommet which would be on the engine side of the firewall?
-2) Has anyone taken the adjuster apart to see how it works? That is what I'm about to do. Seems like there is a very strong spring inside. The bottom attachment seems to be a snap fit with a valley-to-ridge type of design for lack of any more technical terminology. The clutch fork has some lateral movement in the plastic bushing, same with the bottom, but the clutch disc looks fair from the top view hole. About 1 cm disc material on each side of the steel center. Can't see the release bearing or the pressure plate diaphragm fingers to see how that is fairing....maybe I don't want to!!! Anyway while it isn't popping and ratcheting away the normal clutch pedal travel, all is good!
Need some moral support and hopeful help so chime in one and all!
MERRY CHRISTMAS and let the GOOD TIMES ROLL!!!!
Adios,
Bruce

Hi, You're right about the auto adjuster and it does sound like it's slipping. Never had one in bits but I bet it's full of nice brittle plastic bits.
If you say it resets when the pedal is lifted I can't see it being the clutch it'self. I'd be tempted to try another cable. Cheeper and less hastle. Don't know if this pic is any use to you. alut:

OK...however citroen parts are hard to get here. Can you tell me what # 1 is on your exploded view? It seems some type of a helper return spring. My "mechanic" keeps spraying oil on it saying that it is fixed! I'm used to U.S. vehicles and this is my wifes. So I'm improvising to say the least...anyway gotta get this thing working with what I have. I greatly appreciate your response, thanks.

Hi, this is just a pedal return spring, I'm presuming your mechanic sprayed it because it was making a noise ????? anta:

At this time I have had the auto adjuster apart and tried to "tune" it up but just a little wear and this thing doesn't hold! So now I am making a permanent spacer to duplicate the "idea" of shortening the cable length with the Citroen engineered plastic "cinch-sleeve" (I give permission to adopt that term for this piece (of s#@t). So now is the testing procedure to get the final fit. I have found that a bottle-jack handle was a good fit and used my hand grinder w/cutting blade to cut a slot to fit over the cable, lengthwise. Then to cut to lenght and fit from the bottom of the auto-juster. Hope it works!
Good times, pura vida, Merry Christmas, Cheers to all!!!
