Stereo stopped working
#1
Hi, maybe a coincidence but while using the cigarette lighter the stereo lighter beeped at me and stopped working. it won't turn on anymore but will still eject and insert cd's. it's an aftermarket one. Any ideas please?

You don't say what make or model your after-market stereo is.
If the CD player mechanism still functions I would be checking all
of the in-line fuses on the stereo. If there are none blown then it's
likely that the fault lies within the stereo.

Surely if the cd mechanism is working then there is power and maybe its the head unit at fault

Sorry it's a Sony Xplod, doesn't say the model number on the front. We've just borrowed the car and it stopped working while we were using it. would be nice if it's something simple so i can sort it out before we give it back. But yes i assume there's power going to it, and why the heck would it go "beep beep beep" before it died, must be specific to the stereo.

Take the front panel off and sometimes there is a reset button which can be pressed with a pin, usually the beeps mean the disc is faulty or unreadable.

Can't see a reset button. I've taken the stereo out, it's a Sony CDX-GT25, looked up the user manual, nothing too useful in that. The fuse in the stereo is fine. I've done a bit of googling and quite a few have had this problem (on other cars) one of which said it was actually a fuse in the car.

Look at the fuses to the right of the steering wheel. The permanent live might be still there but the fuse for the ignition live has popped.

I can't recall which one it is but think mine was a 20a sat somewhere in the middle of the fuse board. It covers the 12v and cigarette lighter as well I think.

Ah that would make sense as it happened while using the cigarette lighter. i've opened the panel below the steering wheel and was greeted with this http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/795/2...083805.jpg theres also a set of spare fuses and a little tool thing. its hard to see/access them, how do you get at them? i can turn those white knobs but then what?

OOh it's the big 20 amp yellow fuse at the back thats clearly blown. none in the spare pack so will have to go find one. will let you know if it worked.
