A little while after I got my ’07 1.6HDI M59 70k van I was driving up a hill and the engines power started to surge and drop repeatedly. After I crested the hill it was still doing it so I dropped a gear and revved it hard for a while and it cleared. I worried about the turbo, or could it be water in the fuel, the egr valve etc. But as it quickly cleared I let it go. This has happened a couple of times since after some two years, generally on a hill and similarly gone away. Yesterday it happened again and has not cleared, this time it definitely feels like the dreaded turbo as the surging occurs at expected boost times. But why would it be a failing turbo when it had done the same thing briefly some two years ago and it cleared – I’m flummoxed!
I’ve got a P0299 ‘turbo under boost’ fault logged on obd, but as there is no unusual noise from the turbo I’m wondering if it’s a sensor problem or perhaps the waste gate solenoid. One interesting thing was that last weekend I was towing a heavy trailer up a hill and the power dipped. With the windows open I could hear a funny noise like turbo boost dumping, perhaps the ECU spinning up the turbo in response to a heavily pressed accelerator. This seemed to upset the power characteristics for the rest of the trip.
….Ohh for the simple days of proper diesels with no electronics!
Has anyone had any similar experiences resolved, or can point me to a relevant post, or has any idea as to which bit I should hit with the hammer!! ? :thumbsup:
