Rusted Sump
#1
Even though I knew they were prone to rusting, and that i had over the past 5 years taken preventative measure to prevent it happening by cleaning and painting and applying Kerrust etc, my 2003 1.9 diesel engine steel sump has rusted through at the front just below the oil filter and oil is dripping out when the engine is running, can anyone here tell me where I can purchase a decent quality replacement please. I see they are on sale on Ebay, but are they a decent quality? thanks.

Sorry to say this but that seems expensive - it is around 5 years ago but I paid less than that from Citroen and it didn't need a gasket, it uses sealant. There certainly wasn't a gasket on ours when I replaced it.

For prevention I always wipe it with the old oil when I do an oil change - as we do at least 15K miles per year that means it gets a coating reasonably often.

Changed the sump between the showers during the weekend, as mentioned above there was no gasket fitted, just clear sealant but used the gasket i got with a tube of Hylomar I got from work, sealed it up nicely, no leaks, except the sump plug has a drop of oil on it every time i look under, the new sump didnt come with a new plug n copper washer, had to fit the old one....so Im gonna take the plug out and heat the washer up in the sitting room fire to soften it and then refit. Job took an hour.

Here we go again, I've reused the old washer for 7 years without a leak. Over 1000000 miles and at least a dozen oil changes.

If it ain't broke don't fix it

I never changed the washer on our old Berlingo but it didn't leak. I would change it 7f 7t was leaking.

I may have to change thse sump on our 2007 Romahome because it is very rusty at the front even though I treat it every 6 months when I change the oil.

The Dowty washers can be re-used but I always change the copper ones & definitely the crush type. I am not known to be liberal with the folding stuff but for the price of a washer, sod the expense.Confusedalut:
