MK1 rear windscreen wiper faulty.

The rear windscreen wiper is not working on new acquisition. It is making a noise when switched on, but no movement. If it possible to open the motor unit up and try and clean bushes etc. Or is it a replacement job.

Does the wiper arm move freely if you remove the motor?

I don't know what you mean by that?  Is the wiper arm not attached to the motor unit via a splined shaft?  Do you not have to remove the wiper arm from the shaft to remove the motor assembly?

No doubt all will become clear to me this weekend when I take the motor out.

Yeah I could of worded it better!

Remove the wiper arm and activate the motor if it doesn't work get yourself down a scrappy and replace the motor.

Double check you have voltage at the motor first though.

There's always the option of giving the motor a good dose of electrical contact cleaner to see if that frees it.

The motors are normally riveted in, so may need to be drilled out to remove, never got round to fixing this on my mk1

Is the rear windscreen wiper not checked at MOT?

It looks like the one on mine has already been replaced.  3 wires coming in to the connector from the harness and 4 wires on the motor!  Rivets have been drilled out and bolts in their place.

Still does not work though.  There is power at the connector.

Anyone any idea of the correct part number I need or if it's not part of the MOT will be left.

Well I had it for from 2010-4 and it was never mentioned in that time. I can only find stuff via google that says that they test the front ones.

Don't worry about it working for the MOT, it is not part of the test. Mine hasn't worked for the last couple of years and it's passed MOT.

The teeth on the plastic gear has gone on mine and trying to find a replacement motor for the single lift up rear door has proved difficult.

If this is a motor with the washer feed coming up the drive shaft and then to a nozzle fixed to the wipe arm, it is the most stupid Bosch design ever. Water gets into the motor when an internal O ring seal leaks and corrodes the internals in a spectacular fashion - I have some pictures but never got around to putting them on my website of failures! Little use getting one of these motors from a scrapyard - they all go the same way. I actually managed to make one good one out of two but it was a 2 hour job. The water feed to the washer nozzle must be redirected somehow so NOT to pass up the driveshaft of the unit, a separate nozzle can be fitted , as used on my Xsara Picasso, or omitted altogether. If you are lucky enough to have a motor of this type that still works, disconnect the water feed asap and you might still have it working in future years. Like I said, the most stupid design I have seen in a long time. It is a 52 plate MPV by the way, single lift up rear door. Luckily I don't own it. It is the subject of my other thread about BSI electrical gremlins.

Nice robust engine. french electrics and a wiper motor made by Bosch who ought to know better.
