Accelerator problems - photogirl - 17-08-2011

Ok so I have a problem and I am trying to figure out what it might be. MOST of the time the green mean machine is fine. But sometimes when I press the accelerator (usually half way through or home from my journey to work) when I press the accelerator pedal it makes a really loud noise.

The only way I can describe it is half way between being low pitched and like a lawnmower or something and half sounding like it's way over revving but without the high pitched whine.

None of the warning lights come on.

The power also seems to drop to slow but not completely gone.

It is a 35 1.9d model with what the garage call an unusually large sump guard but thats been on since the van was born due to the previous ownership.

Does anyone have any ideas or experience with these happenings?
