Manufacturer's Extended Warranty - andy-womble - 23-09-2011
Can't believe that we have owned the Berlingo for almost 12 months, just passed its MOT and hopefully got a clean bill of health.
Unfortunately the 12 month Citroen Select Used Vehicle Warranty the vehicle came with is about to expire and we have been given the option to purchase a further 12 or 24 months of cover.
The quotation came through today but unfortunately I do not have the policy document to refer to but the sales libretto had several exclusions and items not covered by warranty.
Nearly fell through the floor when we saw the prices £500.00+ for 12 mths and £1000.00 for 24 mths, bloody hell at the end of the 2 years the residual value of the vehicle would probably be less than the £1k anyhow.
At this stage we ain't got the cash so looks like we are not taking up the option....

Not really worth it. The 'catch all' exclusion is 'known problems' anything major is a 'known problem' so not covered.

When I had my Jag, Jaguar wanted £1300 for a years warranty!!
But, it did include just about everything except a few consumables, it included tyres, exhaust, brake pads, clutch and breakdown cover though.

They wouldn't sell these extended warranties if they didn't expect to make a healthy profit on them. Or, to put it another way, they wouldn't sell extended warranties unless they expected the average purchaser to make a substantial loss on them.
So, on balance, they are not a wise buy. Some people who buy one will end up better off as a result, but most will not.
There are, it seems to me, only two good reasons for buying one:
1) You have reason to believe that your particular vehicle is likely to need a lot more money spent on it than most vehicles of the same age, or
2) You find that warranties give you peace of mind so that if you spend your money on one, you get a better night's sleep.

You could say that about any warranty/insurance.

I have a Warranty Direct policy on both my BMW bike and my Berlingo. The Berlingo costs £250 a year and when you consider how much workshop time you get for £250, in my book its worth it.
As long as I have the pair of them regularly serviced by a VAT registered repairer I'm covered. There's no requirement to go to Main Dealers and that's what I like about it.
The exclusions are minimal but fair....and Honest John recommends this company! :colors:
