Grinding noise when steering slow and on full lock - strepcil - 15-09-2016

Hi my berlingo 1.6 diesel is making a grinding noise when in full lock or when going slow. This is far worse when left turning. The van steers ok but the grinding can be quite loud from inside. The garage had a very quick look this morning but not on the ramp. He said he dosnt think it's the rubbers and mentioned could be the steering rack which I know is pricey. Any ideas as new to this forum cheers.

my MK2 van was doing something very similar, on slow left turns and when turning the steering to the left when at standstill there was a low growling/vibration type noise at about 3/4 lock. Check for loose pipes, clamps etc on steering system but couldn't find the cause. This started back in June and as it didn't affect the steering I just let it be but kept monitoring it. Put the van in for its MOT last week and turns out the O/S coil spring was broken right at the top , behind the strut, just where the last section of spring coils back around and sits on itself in the top mounting. The MOT tester ( a very good mate) said it was very difficult to spot unless the van was raised up far enough to let the suspension drop right down. He had noticed the protective cover on the top coil had come adrift partly and assumed the noise he had heard when testing was from the spring rubbing against the top mounting but on closer inspection with the steering on full lock he managed to see the break. Anyway I had him fit a new spring and top mount kit and the MOT was a pass. No more noise . Result.
