Bad fuel leading to all sorts.... - mpt - 16-07-2012

Hi guys, just wondering if one of you guys would be able to point me in the right direction...

2 months ago now my 2009 berlingo 1.6 hdi started misfiring and a loss of power. I took it back to the dealer, they said that i had filled up with a bad batch of diesel so changed the filter and i was off and running again...or so i thought...

A few weeks later, the same problem arose, only this time the engine warning light came on and a message saying "antipollution system failure" appeared on the display. As soon as this happened, the car would no longer rev past 3000rpm...

I took the car back to the dealer, who then proceeded to tell me that all the injectors would need to be changed (@ $1200AU each) and that the total bill for the repair would be around the $10000AU mark!!!

My question is, does any of this make any sense? Being a 2009 model, the car wouldn't be worth much more than the 10k they are quoting to fix it. Also, is it feasible to get some reconditioned injectors and throw them in, or is there more to it than that? Is there something that needs to be reset in the ecu etc?

My apologies for the essay, but i use this car for work and have lost confidence in my local dealership and i figured who better to ask than you guys!!

regards

mpt

Anti pollution failure sounds like dpf not injectors. If rhe injectots are shot the car wouldnt run, or at least be lumpy as hell and on 3 cylinders.

I would try a different dealer before parting with that sort of money,

Try and find a trusted local garage to look at it as the dealers sound way way way over the top on what they want to charge! Plus as northants says, seems like they are doing the usual guess work having mis-diagnosed the problem once already.

I am guessing 10k Au is around £3k which is crazy money. You could have a complete reconditioned engine fitted for that sort of amount.

Could your "anti pollution system" failure be the Exhaust gas recirculation (egr) valve sticking ? . This valve recirculates the exhaust/crankcase gases to the engine for complete burning to reduce harmful emissions. Try a search on this forum for exhaust gas valves. there are some posts which might give some help
If they stick it goes into limp mode , designed to get you home and not cause damage to your engine until the fault is cleared

I think the garage have got it stuck in their mind that bad fuel + uneven running + filter change = injectors damaged therefore new injectors needed = ($$$$)

Try another garage but dont tell them about bad fuel.

Thanks for the replies guys - you've given me hope....I'll do some more research (probs take it to another dealer as well) and will post my results.

Thanks again

For a good source of local dealer/repairer knowledge you could have a look here:

Our car (not a Berlingo, a Pug 308 with the same 1.6HDi 90 engine) had the dreaded 'Anti-pollution Fault' at around 36K miles.

The car had just been serviced a week or two before it appeared. The garage cleared the fault codes but couldn't find anything wrong. It happened again - the car cut out, would restart but only run in 'limp home' mode, cut out again etc.

The cause - a dirty fuel filter, simple as that. These engines as so highly tuned (aye, even at 90 bhp!) it takes next to nothing to throw off the engine management system.

Always best to check the easiest things first.

So even in OZ 'A bad batch of Fuel' is the dealers chosen fairytailRolleyesAs time goes by and mileage racks up (and warranties become void), my early post 'Make DPF a DODO' is sure to come back round again, being a cab firm we have probably seen this type of fault before most, and I think the only solution is to totally remove the system, including a remap to disable any future 'flag up' warnings.
It has been the only pain with otherwise excellent citroen vehicles.
They may solve it for now, and charge accordingly, but it will return.

Hi guys, well after months of stuffing around asking citroen dealerships and getting responses ranging from "high pressure pump and injectors are gone - its going to cost you around $10000" to a flat out "we dont know, you should take it to a diesel specialist", we have finally solved the problem. I bought one of those $10 obd things and downloaded the "torque" app, connected it all to the car and got about 10 fault codes. After clearing some of the codes, we came to the conclusion that it was the fuel pressure regulator - the codes said that the pressure limit had been exceeded.

Armed with this new information, we did indeed take it to a diesel specialist who confirmed our suspicions and within a day and a half and $600.00 (including an oil change), we are now back on the road after simply having the fuel pressure regulator changed.

MPT

Thanks for the feed back, I dont suppose you'll go back to the original dealer for any repairs.

It was a well spent $10 for the Obd thingy !
