Casing Conundrum - Barkas - 04-08-2013

Went to order some parts yesterday and I though I would read the engine number from the engine block on my 1.9d, Had the car for 10 years now and never seen it, its next to the oil filter/cooler, BUT.....when I got down under the engine there to look, I have found that there is a large piece of the engine casing missing all together, along with most of the engine numbers with it.
On closer inspection after cleaning, the missing section has not been broken off, its a smooth dimpled recess 5mm deep and 40mm long, it seems to be a casting defect on the casing, ive got the first 3 engine numbers then.... zilch.
