ECU fault
#1
Hi all I am new to this I apologise for the long thread but need to fill you all in!!
I bought a berlingo 1.9D dw8 engine (56) plate last September and it's always had a problem been to various garages and even citroen specialists . My van is always noisy like a diesel knock, always seems to be smokey and shaky and lacking power and the rev counter doesn't work properly, so after taken it to many garages and cost me a lot of money I've changed my 1st or 4th injector the wire one, my advanced solenoid , had the wiring and timing checked and still the same problem so now sent my ecu to be tested and they've said there is nothing wrong with ! So I sent it back saying there could I try a clone ecu to eliminate it which they have sent me saying its a virginised ecu with my original chip in it but my van still won't start !! Why would this be or am I being ripped off. Will a virginised ecu work on my van or does it need to be exact software etc . I know my van has an immobiliser but it also has it on the fuel pump aswel as I've been told

Can someone please help me I've spent a lot of money which I now think I didn't have to and now my van is off the road and really need it fixed ASAP

Many thanks

Are you saying you no longer have the original ecu?

Generally immobilisers have to be coded to the ecu to work.

Smokey, shakey and lack of power could be a egr valve that's stuck open or potentially a blown head gasket.

Is there any codes from the eml?

First of all, was it like this when you bought it? Hope it was reflected in the price!

I have a 2004 Picasso 2.0 HDi (similar engine) and had the cambelt changed. On the way home, on the motorway, and in the outside lane, the engine lost power, made smoke, and knocked loudly. I managed to limp to a garage where it was found the cambelt had slipped at least one notch due to locking compound missing from the tensioner bolt. It cost £560 to repair. The No 2 valves were bent slightly but damage to the piston was minimal. After the repairs the engine runs fine again.

Could this have happened to you? The engine would run but made noise, smoke, and had little power. Pedestrians turned their heads as I passed!

Hi guys thanks for your reply ! Also no I didn't buy it like it I bought it and it was ok so I thought !! As the next morning when I started it it sounded awful so he must of took it for a drive before I seen it also my rev counter was working fine aswel at that time but my fuel gage wasn't , then I took it to a garage and they said the injector with the wire wasn't even plugged in , that's when I took it to a citroen specialist he plugged it in and it came up as no engine speed which he changed the speed sensor and the injector and checked the wiring and the timing , that's when the other problems started . As since he sorted the speed sensor my rev counter doesn't work properly and then van started being more smokey and shakey and loss of power but my fuel gage worked , he then said he couldn't do much more take it to a diesel specialist which they ripped me off saying it was the advanced solenoid , so I then took it to another citroen master tec and he plugged the computer in and keeps coming up with the code p0725 which is the speed sensor saying s/c or o/c on speed sensor which I bought another sensor and he cleared the faults then retested and came back with same fault that's when he said it got to be faulty ecu which I am now stuck in the middle of as the company has my existing ecu but they say there nothing wrong with so I've asked for a clone ecu to eliminate the ecu and now that's why I'm asking about does a virginised ecu with my chip in matter with different software or reference codes as it won't start and I'm with no van so need this sorted ASAP can someone please help

It sounds like you've been down a right old swanny, for starters the exchange ecu will never start your van in a million years, the stop solenoid in the pump is coded to the ecu, no matter what they do to that ecu they can't Virginised it like a hdi one, it'll never start as the solenoid needs to be paired with the ecu, if they've swapped the correct chip then it should but I be honest they sound clueless, so get em to put your old ecu back together an get it running at least... That's for starters...

Next your issue does sound like the crank speed sensor has gone down, it's on the rear of the block at the gearbox end from memory and has a 12-18" wire coming off it to a plug, I would get someone to test the wiring to it, they are all over the shop without the speed sensor, common problems are to lose a live or earth from the sensor... I'm surprised that a master tech hasn't checked it tho, it will run without a speed sensor signal in the way you describe, get the van running and check for 12v and earth at the sensor plug and also the signal out of it with an oscilloscope at both the sensor plug end and the ecu end of the loom then report back....

As for the "Citroen master tech" giving you a p code back, he wasn't using lexia as they give a far better description alongside a p code, far more useful and he should know your engine inside out if he's actually a master tech... Dw8's have been fitted since god was a kid and every fault known to man has been diagnosed by most master techs.... I would take it with a pinch of salt unless he has an array of certificates from Coventry to say he's a master tech Wink

Reading what you said about the Citroen specialist about the rev counter acting up more I definately suspect wiring issues to the crank sensor!

Thanks dum dum yeah your right there but it's cost me a fortune and still not getting anywhere. Im already regretting sending it there now as they sent me just a virginised ecu and I had to tell them about the fuel stop solenoid that's why I need my chip in there. So in theory though a virginised ecu with my chip in there should work fine correct ? Also do you know what chip it is as clearly these don't !! I changed the crank sensor not long ago and he checked that there was no open circuit from ecu to the sensor with a multimeter. I'm waiting for the company to send me another ecu with my chip in as I've already paid them nearly £350 if that doesn't work il have to get them to put my chip back in my old ecu and try and get my money back, then I've got the problem that the master tech is on holiday for 2 weeks so is there any advice you could give me to try it and test

Many thanks

You need the engine back to its poor running state before you can test ideally, but the crank sensor will have 12v and earth to it with a return signal back, there's only three pins to it from memory and I seem to recall it being a Hall effect sensor.... We had one where the 12v feed had dropped out, this caused all manner of issues and made it run as you say...

Hi don't want this subject unfinished so I've finally had my virginised ecu with my chip in it back and I've finally got the van started but I've got exactly the same problem so looks like another waste of money !!! So now to check the speed sensor (crank sensor) wiring yes it has 3 pins but does anybody know the sequence of it there are number 1 2 @3 could somebody please help and tell me which one is live ,earth and signal there are three cables coming from the ecu which are coloured red green and black but don't want to just assume and get it wrong so can someone please help

Many thanks

Your assumption is probably correct....

If memory serves me red is supply, green is signal and black is earth.

You can test the sensor only with oscilloscope if you have one.
I can send you the test procedure.
With the sope you will be for sure if the sensor is ok or not.
