Intermittent indicator fault when damp
#1
I've had a problem for the last 2 years with an intermittent indicator fault when damp conditions occur, and it's getting on my nervesRolleyes
It usually happens 1st thing in the morning when damp, but can happen in in summer when it's very humid/a sudden rain storm.
I get a total loss of indicators left and right, or they'll flash in each direction I set them on a few times, then stop working. Both situations are solved when I put the heater on for a while, and when they are semi working I have to keep returning the stalk to neutral and then re apply in the direction I want, to get more flashes.

So far I've checked the connector blocks/terminal to the comms unit and sprayed with WD40.
Waggled the indicator stalk whilst at fault...no change
Put the hazard lights on when indicators at fault, hazards work fine.
Checked the indicator stalk is still 'tight', it's not at all floppy.

I'm at a loss, does anyone have any experience of this problem?
I suspect damp is getting in, or a possible relay fault as it's a intermittent fault in nature.
I recently sparyed the connector blocks in the PSF with WD40 and the problem with the indicators has become far less frequent...however...that could just be coincidence :S

Any help much appreciated

BSI PCB getting wet. That's my best bet.

Thanks for the feedback O ;-) I've read up on the BSI issues on the forum and suspected as much and 2 things spring to mind (I've owned the vehicle from new)
I can't remember if the windscreens been replaced but that would be a likely culprit for water ingress. I've had this problem on a previous car, a Ford Escort.
The second thing is that the RAC replaced the battery for me when I was at my allotment due to a sudden cell failure in the battery (their diagnosis) and I do not remember any BSI process being adhered to whilst watching them replace the battery.
The escorts fuse box was in a place where it was easily accessed and you could see the water tracking on the wiring loom. The Berlingo BSI is in a right awkward place and has to be dropped out to be visible, as you'll know!
I'll have to test it for obvious signs of water ingress, thing is sometimes when I have this fault it hasn't been raining overnight, just damp.

Have a look at the windscreen scuttle to see if its full of crap and the drain holes blocked so the water cant run away.
Are we there yet????? Huh

Hi T, I removed the scuttle last week, it was relatively clear around the drain holes but you've reminded me of something. Looking at the scuttle from front of car there's a small rubber insert that slips onto the bottom of the rh scuttle tray...is there meant to be one on the lhs...if so it's missing..hmm

I will have to look at mine in the morning and check that out for you.
You could try a bsi shutdown and startup procedure and see if that makes a difference.

Thanks T. I need to check for water ingress first, if that's not the problem I'll will probably have to try the BSI procedure. It's only a matter of time before this is issue is detected at MOT :-(

You'll be able to see if the board has been getting damp as there will
be tell-tale water marks visible.

Well, it's been raining here all morning and most of the night and I've just gone to Eurcocarparts, a 25 min journey either way with 20 mins on the motorway. I checked for water ingress before and after the journey, there is no water getting in! The indicators behaved themselves apart from on the way back when they decided to stop working for 2 attempts at a round about!

Guys and gals, bringing this one back to life. I haven't had this issue for a while so haven't done anything about it, but on Wednesday it happened again and this time I had chance to 'play', though not before driving 30 miles on the M6 without indicators :censored:
New info..
No head lights on, indicators work fine
Dipped head lights, indicators work fine
Main beam...no indicators.
I tried this many times, even the father in law witnessed it and I'm now more confused than ever....my thinking

Why would the head lights have anything to do with the indicators...I'm thinking they're on different 'circuits'
Knowing nothing about car electricals and understanding electrical diagrams is not a strong point...a theory
if the indicators are on a relay (switch) could the head lights be taking too much power thus the relay isn't switching.

I'm totally at your mercy and the worrying thing for me is potential costs of new stalk, a new BIS, or taking it to an auto electrician ...none of them cheap options.
