Hey guys, will be taking off the sump on my 1.6hdi tomorrow to clean it out along with the oil pick up pipe. Does any thing else have to be removed proir to this? Thanks

Yes the cat and its heatshield

The exhaust pipe stops you from getting to a couple of the bolts.

Make a note of where you took the bolts from as you take them off as some are different lengths.

And don't forget the gasket sealant.

The most likely blockage risk is in the turbo feed pipe, you ought to have a go at this whilst your at it, cat will be in the way for, that.

Hi guys quick update removed the sump yesterday, managed to leave the exhaust in place just disconnected the joint. Hardest part was breaking the sealant bond to get the sump off I used a putty knife, man that original sealant was strong! Well back to the point I didn't even have to clean anything the sump the oil pick up, and bottom of the engine was as clean as a whistle to my surprise no black sludge in sight.
I remember reading on here about people saying about oil being left in the sump from the recess in the sump plug, and yes there is a fair amount of oil you will never get out from just dropping the oil!

Looks like my sump leak has got a bit worse since I first looked under the car so am thinking about dropping the sump sooner rather than later, but am hoping to get a few hundred miles at least out of the fresh oil I put in so it'll be a couple of weeks unless things get worse.
From what I remember, there are 2 studs holding the sump on in addition to the bolts, one at each end. At the alternator end the stud is used to hold a bracket holding a radiator hose, but so far as I recall the one at the exhaust end does nothing. Am I right in thinking that if I remove all of the bolts & studs, the sump will slide out under the exhaust flexi? From what I read above & in another thread the flexi joint will need to be undone but that's all?

Thanks in advance.

You could catch the oil in a clean container and put it back in if it's only just been changed. Wink

Yeah, that did occur to me but the thought of pouring black gunk through the top just doesn't seem right. It's unclear when the oil was last changed before I bought the car in August so I'll give it a few days to wash around then empty the oil out. I bought 2 lots of oil & filters at a good price & had always intended to do a quick change, but had a couple of thousand miles in mind, so can't complain too much.

Back on the subject of the sump, seems that the 2 studs have shoulders which sit under the sump and from what I read on the FCF they are there for locating the sump and also for helping to break the seal when getting the sump off.
I'm not certain if the studs will allow the sump to slide under the exhaust flexi, does anyone know about this?
