Water pouring out if expansion tank !
#1
Hi folks car been running no bother and tonight it's chucked its water out of the expansion tank!! The temp was low to medium on dash heater on half way starting to get chilly! Or I'm getting old!! Haha
Anyway pulls up on drive and I hear water and hissing noise and the expansion bottle is kicking out water out of the little spout on the end quite a bit still going after a couple of minutes. Anyway I check the rad for cold spots but it has an even warmth all over it (suspecting a blocked vain or 2) but seem ok doesn't mean it's not tho.
I've always had a little hiss from the rad cap as the rubber is twisted(not sure if it's meant to be would expect not) and have noticed drips of oil in water bug not lost any oil and no mayo in oil cap, thought may have oil cooler leak possibly?? Buy after this I'm thinking the worst head gasket!! Ahhhh
Any ideas or people just advise fill it back up and drive to gather tomorrow for a pressure test??
Bugger just getting MOT and few little jobs sorted n all.. Ah well that's life hey ho could be worse...

Hi Baz,
If you're getting oil in the water then I suspect HG too. Otherwise I would have said replace rad cap to ensure it's retaining pressure in system. Next idea would be stuck closed thermostat but you say water is getting through hoses. Pressure test should sort it.

Hi griff,

Yeah rad has nice even warmth to it the heaters blow hot or cold no probs so it's not looking great. I'll ring round tomorrow to see if I can find someone who does the pressure testing to find out for certain hopefully anyway....
I thought air block but can't see why it would get a block now when I haven't even topped water in 9 months I've had it.

Sounds like rad cap.
It has a built-in 1.4Bar relief valve which can fail open.

Ok guys

I've had the car in the garage today has the test tube chemical test and the head gasket test and all is clear!!whoo hoo some good news!
The oil getting in the water would point to be the oil cooler so I'm waiting from a parts place up here (C.T.S) to give the price. I wasn't hanging around so I bought some forte flush and did the rad to get shot of the oil residue and in all fairness there weren't a great deal that came out so I'm not sure if it's maybe old oil residue I'm seeing maybe from previous headgasket if Its had a fail??or some tool, has put a rad weld type thing in??

Anyway it's all flushed out with a new fresh water and new coolant with a shiney new expansion/rad cap and everything seems to be spot on heater blowing lovely warm air things seem stable ill give it a proper blast over the weekend and I'll update with result!Confusedalut:

Well jed I'm still not sure it's completely fixed?? I've been driving around the heaters are blowing lovely and warm the new fresh water/anti freeze in and new rad cap on but I still seem to have excess pressure in the system as the over flow on the expansion tank still has a 'hiss ' when I stop??? The rad has an even warmth no cold spots there doesn't seem to be any air locks???
Any ideas would this be normal after a new flush until things settle to a nice level?? Or could the be a block still in rad or something??

Cheers
