remove gearknob

hi folks can anyone tell me how to remove the gear knob (ive got a new one ) on my 04 is it done by just pulling it straight up, as i dont want to be doin any damage like ripping out the gear stick ect.

I ended up using a hacksaw to cut my old gear knob off, cutting from the top down just off center.
This was after pulling and twisting and all other sorts of magical ways of getting it off.  Saw it mate.
