Central locking!
#1
Hi guys,

I don't really do this whole 'online forum' stuff so please forgive me if I do something wrong.

Anyway, I've just bought an '03 plate Multispace Forte 1.9D with only 44.2k miles on as my first car! One problem, the central locking doesn't work. When I press the lock button on the key or on the centre console it sets the alarm and you can hear the car trying to lock the doors but they don't lock. Can anyone shed some light on this issue.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Can you lock all the doors securely with the key? It sounds that you have one lock not fully working which stops the
central locking from engaging. If my tailgate is not properly shut I get the sound of all doors trying to lock.

As Trevor says, usually one of the CL actuators is inop for some reason (sticking, worn etc.) so the whole system won't comply. Only way is to test each actuator individually with 12v power supply.

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes I can lock all the doors with the key but I have to lock/unlock each door individually.

Do the indicator lights flash when you use the key? If so then the car is receiving the correct signal.

Hi Mike,

No, the indicator lights do not flash when I press the buttons on the key.

Cheers,

Tom

Sorry Tom. I have only today picked up your message.

Your problem does sound to be mechanical rather than electronic. In my case the key and central button on dash would lock all the doors and tailgate, but would not unlock them. Pressing the keyfob unlock button flashed the indicators though. This indicates that the key signal is being successfully received by the BSI (On board body systems computer). But the BSI did not then send the 12 volt unlock signal to the various locks. My problem turned out to be poor contact within the BSI. It is composed of 2 boards, one containing all the intelligence and another containing relays and servos which amplify the low signals from the intelligent board into usable 12 volt signals. The 2 boards are connected by a series of pins and they had become very slightly corroded. Removal and treatment was a full cure.
But if you are not getting the flashing from the indicators it means that the signal from the keyfob is not being received. Are you sure that the doors all lock? If one of them (tailgate?) doesn't then maybe you won't get the flashing indicators on unlocking, as the car was not locked in the first place.
I think you just have to be methodical and try to eliminate each possibility

Another answer would be that the previous owner replaced the locks and keys with those from another vehicle. (Berlingo lock barrels are known to
wear badly or seize) As the vehicle is now over ten years old the barrels may have seized and needed replacement. The Immobiliser would not
recognise the code sent by the key and thus there would be no flashing light acknowledgement from the system. Just a thought!
The Older I get the Better I Was!  Cool

Hi guys,

No the keys and locks were not changed by the previous owner. The car has its MOT and full service in a few weeks so I'll see if the garage can have a look for me. Cheers
