You can remove the starter and jam the flywheel  or use an impact wrench,  air or battery, or stick it in gear with h/brake on and a long tommy bar and socket.  Once the bolt is slack then set the timing position.

I wouldn't use the timing pin hole just behind the starter , the casing/locking pin may not be strong enough.
It really depends how tight the pulley bolt is in the crankshaft.

I would move the starter as it helps for inserting the timing pin into the flywheel. Disconnect the battery and remove the starter bolts and move the starter out of the way.

Put a long bar with a socket on it onto the bolt, put the other end on the floor and give a quick tweak of the starter motor without starting the engine. Rougharse, but it works!

You could make a locking tool for the flywheel ring gear, very easy. I posted a picture on the forum of one I quickly knocked up, not posh but functional. It worked well so I never saw the need to make another that simply looked nicer.
