hope this ain't a stupid question but I have just changed my oil and filter on my 1.6hdi 75 belingo. I had problems finding the place for the filter nipple. Am i correct in thinking the filter goes into the engine first with the filter nipple slotting in the hole in the engine block at about 7 o clock as you look at it, then the housing tightens up over the filter? Thanks again guys.

LOL, I learned something. I have always been fitting the filter to the cap first and then inserting the whole thing until the nipple seats and then tighten further. Will try this next time.

Here's an informative article about the filter and in particular the 'nipple' and how it is vital to locate it correctly. I guess because the filter comes out attached to the housing many think it needs to go back in the same way, wrong! The nipple engages in a drain so that when the housing is removed only a small amount of old oil comes out:

The Haynes manual shows to push the filter into the cap and then screw it all in place.
Given the horrible access to the filter housing and the subsequent inability to see if the nipple was correctly in place, I went with the filter first, then cap option.
One question though. As I cannot see the nipple as I put the filter into the housing, Is it possible to fit the filter and the cap, without the nipple being correctly inserted, or would it just not go together?

First time around I tried the Haynes manual suggestion to fit filter to cap, but could not make the nipple or I thought I had put in there. I screwed it (correct torque settings), but then the MFD was constantly complaining about oil pressure, beeping and engine sounded rough. There was simply a gap between the cap and the housing and the cap was not tight enough so letting air in and oil could not achieve pressure.
To answer your question, you can screw it with the filter not being positioned correctly, but because it will be raised, you would not be able to fully screw the cap. If you follow the correct torque settings, by memory 25Nm for the M59 and it is probably the same with B9, you would see if there is a gap.
Subsequently, I always pre-fit the filter in the nipple first and there is only one position, basically you rotate the filter until it slots in the hole. The filter should not move any more if you twist it. Screw the cap on top, it is a bit more difficult as the plastic element needs to go into the filter, so it screeches a bit.

I always assemble the filter to the cap first, then screw the cap with the filter to the filter housing. Tightening torque 25Nm, it is no different from M59 with 1.6HDI.
