Good Afternoon,
I have recently decided to give my van a thourough service, not having any service history when I got it.
56 Plate van. 1.9d DW8, non turbo, no aircon, pas
I have done;
Timing Belt
Auxillary Belt
Water Pump
Oil/Filter
Air Filter
Fuel Filter.
Since I have refilled the coolant (50% mix) the van runs considerably hotter than it did before, prior to me letting loose with the spanners it sat at 80degrees regardless of conditions (open road, traffic) and I don't recall the fan ever kicking in.
Now since I have refilled it (just over 7 litres) it runs at 80degrees on the open road, however sitting in traffic the needle just seems to creep up, it got to 95degrees before I got moving and it cooled down again. When I got home I left it idling and again it went up to 95degrees but the fan didn't kick in before I took it round the block to cool it down.
I've had a nosey through the Haynes book of fibs, and it seems to state the thermostat should be fully open at 99degrees, however it makes no mention of when the fan should kick in. I don't think that there is an airlock as I have run quite a lot of coolant through the bleed valve on the heater matrix and there is no air coming out. I havent opened the block bleed valve (now I know there is one, but thats another story), should I do this?
My questions are;
1. What is expected behaviour of the engine? I'm guessing just sitting there at 80 degrees?
2. What temperature should the fan kick in? And would you expect the temperature to rise like that on idling?
3. Is there a way to test the fan operation? Again the sensor wire on the rad that should be there according to Mr Haynes doesn't exist (or I've misunderstood the location)
Apologies if this is covered elsewhere, but I couldn't find anything that leapt out at me, I'm not the best with forums and searches.
If there is something already there that covers this, if someone could point me in that direction I would be grateful.
Thanks in Advance
Andy.
