[Warning Light] Airbag Warning Light [again!]
#1
Hello, I have a 2007 [57] 1.6Hdi Berlingo Multispace and in the last couple of days both airbag warning lights have come on and I get the messages

"Passenger Airbag Deactivcated" and "Air Bag Fault"

I've tried all the normal fixes of the under seat connectors [Passenger and driver] Sprayed them with contact cleaner [Servisol] and done the same with the seat belt pre-tensioner connectors.

Both front seats have a side airbag as well as the one in front of you, any ideas how you get to those connectors??

Reading other threads on the same subject, I also went down the road of checking the red/white twisted pair of wires from the engine compartment for a broken wire or bad connection/corrosion and have had wipers and the cover at the bottom of the screen off to examine the wiring loom [where I can see them] for any possible damage.

No obvious signs of damage/broken wires but my next option is to do a continuity check from the engine fuse box connector to the BSI

While getting at the Engine fuse box connector is simple enough, I can't seem to get out the BSI to get at the connector [and which connector is it on the BSI?] Any help please?

One really weird thing. While going through fault finding, I inadvertently left out the connector in the engine fuse box and when I started up after wiggling wires all my fault lights and warnings had gone. Then I realised I had left out the engine fuse box connector!! On putting this connector back in the warning lights and messages re-appear on start up. I don't understand how leaving out the connector causes the message to disappear!

Any help [or other ways to go] appreciated. I don't have a diagnostic machine, do I really need to buy one?

Without diagnostic it is very hard to pin point the error. I'm not sure if simple 5$ obd will show the exact error
but I would try it before lexia...

After you have the exact error report here so we can help you...

I have a almost the same problem. Both of my airbag lights are on plus the indication for the handbreak. After losening the contact in engine fuse box and cleaned it the airbag lights whent out just as the should when starting upp the engine. But after about 10 to 15 sec the all three come on again.
Could it be some bad connection in the engine fuse box?
I have tried to use Lexia, but it only tells me that there is no meassurable signal? So I dont even get a usable faulcode.

Well I finally managed to get the Berlingo to a Independent Citroen Dealer to have a diagnostic check carried out today.

The three messages were:

1. Permanent Fault: Communication Fault on the Data Wire with the engine relay unit

2. Permanent Fault: ECU internal [Van interface] not defined code: 1F40 Fault type: Remote

3. Permanent Fault: Passenger's Airbag Deactivation not defined code: 106F Fault type: Remote

Now to me [and the engineer I was talking to] fault No.1 is looking like a broken wire somewhere??

Now the question, would fault 1 cause the messages for faults 2/3 or am I looking at more than one fault here?

Thanks for any help.

You can take any CAN wires and connect to airbag ecu to eliminate wire problems coming to the abs ECU.

But from second error, IMHO you have a bad airbag ECU.

Well, I finally had time to really get to the bottom of this [plus the fact the MOT is due next week and it would be an instant failure with the airbag light on] and it is finally fixed Big Grin

Looking at the other airbag defects on here, I noticed one with a very similar fault here:

http://www.berlingoforum.co.uk/thread-38...rbag+light

And with thanks to both Rustscrat and Coco, I started looking at my data lines out to the the engine relay unit as that was one of my diagnostic faults [communication fault on DATA wire with the engine relay unit]

I cut the data wires [9012/9013] a red/white twisted pair of cables underneath the rain scuttle which I removed after taking off the wipers and did a continuity check to pins 1 and 5 at the connector in the engine relay box as a broken wire would be most likely in the engine bay [as Coco had found in his defect] These both turned out to be OK, so no problem there.

I then went down the line of checking out the airbag ECU data wiring under the centre console. This also turned out to be OK.

I then struggled [and it was a struggle] to get out the BSI....nobody ever warned me what a pain this is to get out, I think it should be renamed Bl**dy Stupid Idea as the looms are definitely not long enough on my 2007 Multispace. Anyway after much agro and a few cuts on my hands, I got the BSI out and doing a continuity check between Pin 6 on the BSI connector and my previously cut DATA wire under the rain scuttle showed an open circuit [This was 9012 the Red wire] the white wire 9013 to Pin 8 on the BSI was fine.

So now all I had to do was splice in a new wire between the BSI pin 6 and the point I had cut it under the rain scuttle.

This proved easier said than done as the is virtually no access under the dash, so I opted to push a new wire in from the outside rain scuttle area. To get to the bung between here and the inside of the car required taking off the drivers side wiper arm mount [ 2x10mm nuts and 1x10mm bolt] and then pivot it out of the way.

The large rubber bung was extremely well sealed and after trying various plastic knitting needles so as not to damage any other wires [the wife won't be too pleased when she sees the state of them] I decided this was going nowhere [I had wasted a good 1.5 hours of daylight trying to make enough room to get a new wire through the bung]

So much as I didn't like doing it, I made a new small hole in another part of the bung and I used a shielded/armoured cable, which had the advantage of being both stiffer and having extra protection around it which I poked into the inside of the car.

I now fed the new cable into the loom on the inside of the car and found a convenient place to cut the red 9012 DATA wire. I then spliced in both ends, protected both ends with plenty of black tape and reconnected the BSI

I also made sure I covered the Rubber bung with silicon sealant to make sure no water was going to ingress into the car and BSI from the engine bay.

Started up the car and YES....both airbag lights come on and then go out [as they should] and no more Passenger Airbag Disabled or Airbag Fault messages.... Big Grin

Some observations/tips when doing fault finding on this system.

As has been stated on many times on this forum, it's definitely a good idea to get diagnostics carried out. In my case, the only permanent fault listed was the broken DATA wire to the engine relay box, which is exactly what it turned out to be.

Make sure you always follow the approved BSI shutdown and power up procedure [look on other threads to find out the info] or you could get yourself into a whole world of pain!

The wiring looms [at least on my BSI] are not long enough to pull the BSI out without disconnecting the plugs in turn. So disconnect the plugs nearest to you pull the BSI out a bit disconnect a couple more, pull it out a bit more etc. until you reach the back plugs.

Note the large rectangular BSI plugs have a quite strange release mechanism, in that you have a sliding coloured collar around three sides of the plug that must be gently slid out while you are lifting the plug upwards to pull it out, so when the plug is fully out, the collar had slid out to its full extent. Refitting them is the reverse while pushing the collar back in you must also be pushing the plug into the connector. Do not force any of the plugs, if they don't want to go in easily take it out completely and have another go.

All the plugs are colour coded with the colours being written on the BSI [albeit in French]

When you have all the connector out of the BSI the sockets in the connector I was checking are very small [too small to get my meter probes into] so I used a piece of fuse wire to poke into the connector to carry out my continuity check [make sure you remove it afterwards!!]

For info the datawire connections from the BSI to the engine relay box were:

Connectors EP and EP1 [one of these being at the Engine relay box and one at the BSI but I cannot remember which is which]

From Engine Relay Box Connector Pin 1 to Pin 6 on the BSI connector [Red Wire 9012]
From Engine Relay Box Connector Pin 5 to Pin 8 on the BSI connector [White Wire 9013]

Hopefully this might be a help to someone else who has this defect, now all I've got to do tomorrow is refit the centre console as I ran out of daylight today!

Problem solved.  My bloke came and did a diagnostic just before Christmas and seems he got the same reports as you did.  He was delayed by some sort of infection in January but he came and picked the camper up on Monday and, thanks to your highly detailed posts he was able to target the faulty wire straight away (same one) during his continuity tests and it simply remained to bypass the faulty connection with a new wire.  Well, maybe not simply as you found.

Thanks for all your help

Thumbs Up
(26-11-2015, 09:46 PM)Just like to say a big thank you for this post,I had the same problem word for word & followed what you did & yes the airbag light went out & now I can take it for its MOT,with out your post I wouldn\t of had a clue what to do, so once again a big thumbs up.
