[Engine] cooling fan / relay clicks, fuse intact, gauge works, fan is not starting

Hi,
in a '06 Multispace, 1.4i, petrol, no A/C [that's right no A/C]

Only has 1 fan in front of a radiator, fed through a relay fitted in a 'can' shaped crevice in its mount, and triggered from ECU. Not looking likely to have a fan speed reduction resistor either (looked around the radiator mount and about where the wires go to main loom)

Radiator fan is not being triggered.

I can make the gauge go up to red & show stop light if I disconnect coolant temp sensor.

If I disconnect a gray connector going to the fan relay crevice, which has thin red, yellow and white cable through, if I connect +12 to the thin red wire, the fan starts.

When the gauge goes up to threshold, by disconnecting the sensor, or if the temperature really is up to level when it should be triggered on, i measured across F8 in engine compartment f/b, there is voltage. (I put a light bulb across from either end of it to ground)

If I take the gray connector out, and make the temp threshold over so it should be energized, both the thin white and yellow wires seem to be energized (I put a lightbulb across from either to ground)

If I take the radiator mount apart, to get the relay socket out, and short the relay contacts with some wire, the fan starts.

If I take the relay out and feed it +12 through the coil contacts (as shown on the case) the relay clicks.
Have not checked the relay for good contact when energized, though.

Could it still be botched relay (not having good experience with the Cartier relays.... had one fail on my other car p106 PAS relay same maker, really bad design; the power contact is directly on the same shape as the terminal... so when it melts around the terminal, it loses contact even though it's clicking) or should I go to the ECU diagnostics (can they say anything about this? I've no engine warning light on.)

The fan will only work IF the temp exceeds 120 c. The trigger bulb is in a dry pocket in the cylinder head, only one wire to it which means it acts as an earth. I took one out and wired it up but it didn't open until 120c was reached.

(above applies to a 1.4 2002 berlingo)

Thanks. But my sensor is in the plastic housing to the right of the engine and has 2 wires. Also have been trying to find a relevant schematic.

Well my sensor is not situated like that. (yours is/was a 2002 'lingo to start with, so not M59 kind I think)

(Also the sensor sits vertical not horizontal, to start with.)

Also my engine has plastic cover on the battery-side, which I think covers the thermostat.
(it's black and silicone'd to the engine block) The sensor is sort of in between block/head and the thermostat cover.

Also like I said, IF i disconnect that sensor, the temp gauge goes up and to the red. And in normal conditions, gauge goes normally showing engine temperature.
(I do not know where could the other 1-wired sensor be, can't see any more sensors in my block)

It sounds like the green sensor in the housing is the engine management system coolant temp sensor and has two wires going to it. One blue and one yellow but not sure of wire coding as mine is taped up.
Are we there yet????? No we fecking ain`t  gggggrrrrrrr

Yeah. And like I said this one seems to be OK.
I'm going to obtain a new relay anyway.

Hi again,
I changed the relay, fan still not starting...

these are pics of my setup:
The radiator top symbol

   

The temp sensor (between head and air filter, green with black connector)
   

The electrical connectors that are on the wiring - beside the one connected to earth/green - that's the only ones leading into the relay housing and then to the fan.

You'll have two sensors - the green one on the top of the engine that you've found, and a second blue one - the mystery sensor that Brod refers to in his thread.

You need to take out the air filter box, and unscrew the mount that it attaches to. On the side of the engine is the second sensor.

OK... but still that Brod's picture doesn't match my engine (the part where the 'mystery' sensor is under is plastic in my case)... Will check.
Also on second page there it says it operates at 118 deg c and its purpose is to 'ground' the wire it's on.
