[Engine] 2.0 HDi (2004) van not starting
#1
Hi,

I went to start my van this morning and the engine turned over perhaps once, and now it won't turn over at all. My first thought was the battery, although it's less than a year old. I took it out and charged it anyway, but that didn't make any difference.

The starter motor has never been particularly brilliant, in that it has never seemed to turn the engine over very fast, but the van has never failed to start until now.

When I turn the key I can hear a click - presumably from the starter motor, but it doesn't seem to even try to turn the engine over.

After researching the problem on the internet I tried starting the van with the headlights on, and they don't dim in the slightest when I turn the key.

Does any of this provide a clue as to whether it could be the starter motor, or the coil, which was the other possible faulty component according to what I found on the internet? No unusual warning lights are coming on.

I'm also wondering how easy this might be to fix myself. I have a small trolley-jack and axle stands, and could probably raise it off the ground enough so that I could squeeze underneath it.

Any advice much appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Al.Being a diesel it won't have a coil.Check all battery & earth leads are clean & tight.I suspect it may be the starter but check everything before parting with your hard earned loot. Can you jump from batt pos to motor?

Could be the starter motor. If you can remove it a local auto electrician should be able to test it.
Other options are a bad earth or Pos battery lead connections. Probably easiest to check these first.
Earth from battery to gearbox and pos from battery to starter motor

EDIT: Must type faster!

Thanks for the fast responses!

I have jump leads, so I take it that I could use one to connect the positive battery terminal to the starter motor. I assume there will only be one terminal on the starter, if earth goes through the engine. Also, what would be the easiest way to access the starter? I'm not even entirely sure where it is.

It's at the back of the engine and space is tight.
Be carefull of connecting jump leads on the Pos side as it is easy to accidently short to earth.
Try using a jump lead from neg of battery to a bolt head or similar on the engine first. This will prove/disprove if the earth side is OK.
If you are going to check with the pos lead, fix it to starter lug first using well insulated leads. When you are sure nothing is touching earth, connect it to battery pos.

Will do, thanks for the advice. I'll be careful.

I take it that the starter will be at the bottom of the engine at the back - is it possible to access it from the top, or do I need to go underneath?

Yes,ive had this before, turned out to be the brushes in the motor either worn out or sticking and not making contact with the armature.Whatever it is you will have to remove it from your car and strip it on the bench. The brushes are easy to get at and cheep to replace.Good luck.P.S. Make sure that when under the car you are safe and that your axle stands can take the weight of the car, they are also very cheep to buy and not worth taking a chance on.

Thanks for all the advice. First thing I decided to try is connecting the negative battery terminal to a bolt on the engine, but like an idiot I connected the positive battery terminal instead!

Of course there was a spark, and I hope I've just blown a fuse. I found the fuse box under the bonnet and pulled out the three largest fuses I could see, two 30A fuses and a 40A fuse, but they all look fine.

The van is now in "eco-mod" according to the dash.

Any ideas would again be much appreciated

EDIT: I've just pulled out all the other fuses in the fuse box and they all look ok.

I'm hoping I may just have discharged the battery and blown the (non-heavy duty) jump lead that I used to short out the positive battery terminal to a bolt, as I pulled the battery out and put it on charge again about an hour ago and it's still charging.

Fingers crossed.
