My Berlingo won't start - again!!
#1
Hello,

I bought a Berlingo Forte 2001 after reading how reliable they are. My first time buying a car by myself. Anyway, it broke down on my way home and I had to be toed to a garage.
I got a new battery and then a new timing belt.
Wouldn't start again.
Back into garage for a service. Drove it home.
No it won't start again and I have somewhere I really need to go today.

The battery light is on and it is turning over but it won't start.

I read somewhere about spraying WD-40, but I don't know where to start it.

Also the mechanic showed me that fuel wasn't getting in somewhere?? And said he pumped the fuel pump. I've tried pumping this but don't know how long I should pump it for??

Any help greatly appreciated. But I would need very specific advice. I want to learn about my engine but I am a complete beginner.

Thanks in advance.

It is a diesel.

Also, could anyone kindly direct me to a diagram on the internet of my 2001 Forte engine so I can locate the different parts as I cant seem to find one???

Thank you.

Hi

This sounds possibly like your fuel priming bulb - or hand primer - in which the rubber deteriorates and lets air in when the vehicle is stood over night. To test this after the vehicle has stood for a while hand prime the system for a minute or so then try starting it normally - if it fires up then the priming bulb is the problem.

Cheers

Hi .Just sticking my 2d worth in if it helps. I have a 2002 1.9 diesel and have had starting problems, turned out to be the glow plugs, all of them had failed. What also can be a problem an this model is the E.G.R. valve this can stick, try hitting it with a rubber mallet,or remove it completely and give it a good clean inside. You can check to see if your getting fuel by opening the fuel filter and looking inside ,make sure there isnt any water in there,it can be flushed by way of the tap which is below the housing. The fuel filter is adjacent to the priming pump.

Main causes of non start on the 1.9 are (easiest to check first)
Poor cranking speed (battery, starter, or cabling)
Air in fuel
Glow plugs
Blocked or faulty fuel filter (usually with a loss of RPM / Power)

Then you have
Faulty injectors (does it smoke)
Poor compression
Timing.
Faulty injector pump
Immobiliser

Most of this should have been covered in the work already carried out.
You have already changed the battery, and the cam belt has been changed so the timing should be right.
The fuel filter should have been changed at the service, so another thing off the list. The glow plugs should have been checked too.

Is there any relation to where it is parked when it doesn't start, i.e, facing uphill?

The lids on the fuel filter can crack & cause similar problems.

Indeed Ron.
I lump that in with *air in the fuel* along with fuel lines, pipes and connections.

Col,

Can you elaborate on the immobilise thing- with mine I can turn the key- the dash lights up- turn to start and I can hear a click then the whole lot goes out- nothing- no lights- nothing. When I disconnect the battery and leave it a while I can go through the motions again and the same thing happens. any ideas?

Thanks

Ah! Your symptoms now sound like a flat battery, or poor electrical connection, as before you said
"The battery light is on and it is turning over but it won't start".

Now if it all goes dead without cranking over, it points to the above. Maybe there is a bad earth connection, either at the battery, or follow the lead to where it bolts to gearbox and check there. It could also be a bad connection on the pos battery lead or where it connects to the starter. The battery could also be flat / faulty so check it with a meter and see if you have more than 13.2 volts across it. Also see what it drops to when the key is turned.

In answer to your immobiliser Q, the key has a chip which has to *agree* with the car, if it doesn't it prevents it starting by inhibiting the injector pump. As yours is not cranking, this isn't the case (assuming 1.9D)

What did the garage say was the cause of the breaking down on the way home from buying the car ?
