I suppose, that problem exists somewhere in a steering joint or steering rack. Please, check all bolt and nuts, especially big-big nut which is on a external CV-joint.
What is the mileage of a car? Do you know, when was replacement of a hub bearing?

the wagons done 56k on a 03 reg, i will check that the cv nut is super tight tomorrow mate, as for the bearing, it hasnt been changed but hasnt done that much mileage!!! the only other thing is the power steering but i cant see how this would affect it?

When you say steering ball joint are you referring to the track rod end or bottom balljoint on the wishbone?
