Well went out today to do fan relay, put fuse back in first and fan stayed off. Even let car run up to temperature and watched fans go on and off again, so weirdly it appears to have fixed itself!
Which is nice.
Will keep relay just in case! Think reconnecting lambda sensor might have cured any error hanging around in the ECU. Anyway, it's fine for now anyway. And the rear wiper motor I got from Looms breakers last week is fitted, so I have a working rear wiper! Drilling the stupid pop rivets out the old one was a pain though!
