Valve clearances and bath water !

Had an interesting day today ..............

Stripped my 1.9D engine as I had heard a non standard noise under the bonnet and wasn't happy about it.

So once in bits I found the cambelt had started rubbing on the aux pulley and had started to shred itself, comparison to a new belt revealed that the old belt had lost nearly 4 mm width !  Not the end of the world and a new auxiliary belt pulley is now on order as the flexi - rubber had started to degrade and also the belt rubbing on the pulley face adjacent to the cam pulley had created wear.

Once apart I stripped out the camshaft to re shim the valve clearances, I knew they needed doing due to the way it started from cold but was surprised at how bad they were ..... my smallest feeler gauge is 1 1/2 thou and this wouldn't fit under ANY inlet cam lobe ! All exhaust clearances were at the correct setting.

I previously did this job at 100k miles ( set at top tolerance ) and now at 130k miles they have basically closed up altogether.

I didn't buy new shims instead I used a flat steel plate and wet and dry paper to smooth them down in size, easy as I have a micrometer to measure them with, with care you can get them evenly measured all around their diameter.

Ok so all is back together apart from cam belt tensioning onwards. Had some help from the boy who offered to " close up " the top end whilst I had a lie down ( bad back ) and when I returned the engine bay and surrounding areas of white paint look like they have had a bad case of the red plague !  He got rather busy with red jointing for the rocker covers and basically it got everywhere ... .hmmm !  Took the covers back off as I was worried about sealant squidging everywhere inside the engine and a good job I did it too.

Ok, now I'm back in the house and my wife comes up to me cursing the heating system in the house and asks me accusingly why the bath water is taking forever to come out of the tap hot, by now I've had enough of the day and upon checking the bath I see she has turned on the cold tap instead of the hot ... doh !  It turns out she has had a few shots of Calvados under her belt.

Anyway the moral is ...... don't put off servicing your vehicle and listen to and act upon all noises, you have been warned.

 Me ?  I'm just going out to the off licence to get a few cans .... happy days.

LOL i think you need it after a day like that let's hope it's not ground hog day tomorrow Smile  what the old saying if you need a job doing properly do it your self  Rolleyes

Jed thank goodness the forecast is for cloudy tomorrow, don't think I could cope with six weeks of automotive winter !!!!

Shim steel and plate are two different things. Ordinary mild steel plate will not last long under the conditions it is enduring and will flatten and wear quicker than higher carbon shim or spring steel.
So where does this bit go then ?

Badly written on my part .......  I flatted the existing shims on a flat steel plate to the required sizes and got them to within 0.005 mm at all points of the shim circumference.

Probably me not paying attention Geoff, I'm a bit under the weather at the moment with a stinking cold. Tell your wife she's not to operate machinery like bath taps under the influence of alcohol in future or she's going in it regardless. Big Grin
