[Engine] rocker/cam cover gasket
#1
i wanted to replace the rocker cover gasket on my 2001 berlingo van so i bought a 2 gasket kit but only 1 of them fits
the 2nd one is different to the one i need.
I have a 2001 berlingo 1.9 diesel van 1868 cc
the gasket i want to replace looks like it is a flat gasket and the one i received looks like it will fit the lower part of the rocker cover with a groove in it to receive the gasket.
who ever did the last gasket repair used only gasket seal instead of a new gasket so i have nothing to compare it to.
any help will be nice
thanks

There were some dw8 engines that did not have a gasket , it was a bead of silicon that is used. If your cover does not have a groove for a gasket then its a silicon bead one you have.

There has been questions raised about this before.

thanks for your reply
I will look in to this.
I think i need to understand a bit more about exactly what van i have because i will be buying more wrong bits in the future.
If id known for sure that my van was gasket seal only then i could of had this job done and dusted on saturday but now it will be another 2 weeks till i get to work on it again.
Thanks Brodfather11

I am having the same issue...Im very new to berlingo vans...but with the help of the knowledgable guys on here Im learning quite a bit up to now...I noticed that after cleaning my very dirty engine I have some oil running down the back of the block onto/into the manifold...it seems to be coming from the Rocker cover...on inspecting the front of the block there is a little oil in the glow plug grooves and the silicon seal appears to be cracked in lots of places...now the Haynes manual says it should be a gasket seal ?...it describes "XUD & DW" engines...I have no idea what is in my van..its a 2000.... Mk1 same as yours...Ive not removed the cover yet...so its anyones guesse whether it should be a gasket or not but I shall buy both and let you know what I find,
Regards,
Steve..

Ask at the main dealer about price and availability of the gaskets and exactly what you need, simples.

I did this a couple of years back when I first bought my van and was struggling to determine online exactly what to buy and I'm not dull !

I found for my MK2 DW8 1.9D that only one of the two gaskets were available loose across the counter and I was advised to use the liquid gasket as said above. I was however told / shown on screen that both gaskets were available if I bought an entire engine gasket set - expensive.

Liquid gasket is fine just don't flood everything with it to prevent the stuff getting into the oilways.

Well Steve im probably going to go the liquid gasket route and give it plenty of time to settle.
i was worried about there not being enough pressure on it to make a good seal because there are only 3 bolts in the center of the aluminium part of the rocker cover.
But when i removed them , i must say that they were surprisingly loose so i guess a bit of thread lock will be used.
Good luck with sorting yours and when i get a chance to do mine , i hope it goes well and then i will be ready for the next jobs to be done.

I have just come off the phone to tthe dealer..I gave him all the engine details..he told me that the top was a gasket...and the bottom sealant...the prices are £15 for the top gasket and for their own sealant £10..dont know if thats expensive or not..but thats the way Im going...Im also cleaning out the sump and the filter so the sealant will be used ...good luck with yours,
Steve

You guys thinking of using *liquid gasket*
I can highly recommend Vauxhall sealant Pt No: V0093165267 available from your local G.M. dealer.

I have tried all sorts and this is one of the best

Thanks Col...Ive just read up on doing these gaskets and boy is it awkward..never in my life have I had to take off an exhaust manifold to do a rocker gasket..lol...my worry is breaking a stud...going by the Haynes manual that is...what a strange beast these vans are...can I use that stuff on the sump aswell,
Steve..
