This will not be news to the mechanics and mot testers in our fold but ive just read an interesting article in car mechanics this month that may be of interest to you all.
The Government has updated its guidelines about vehicles failing the MOT. If the vehicle fails its MOT you will now be given refusal mot test certificate and it will be recorded on the VOSA database. You must not drive the vehicle on the road if it fails the test even if the current MOT has not run out. Except to have the failed defects fixed or to drive to a pre arranged MOT test.
And as a little incentive the fine for no MOT is up to £ 2500 possible ban and 3 points to make your day.
So if you think "its ok its failed ive got a couple of weeks to fix it I will carry on putting the miles on"

More bloody hoops to jump though, What are are you supposed to do if it Fails and the testing garage is not able to fix it?

Say for argument, you go to kwik fit for an MOT. It fails on damaged bodywork. Now what are you meant to do?
The garage will want rid of it as its taking up space and getting it into a body shop usually requires an appointment.

It's always been illegal to drive an un-roadworthy vehicle, MOT or not. I guess this just makes it easier to monitor. A MOT just means the vehicle passed on the date it was tested, not that it will remain legal for the whole year.

in the past you got a warning on the fail sheet if the tester thought the fail ures meant the vehicle was unroadworthy, which was logical.

now the website says that any failure means the vehicle is unroadworthy... patently nonsense when you can fail on a damaged numberplate.

in practice it means its now pointless getting an early test.

i guess the next question must be has the law actually changed or is the gov website actually incorrect?

Is there any dodgy mot stations around these days just the one's that say you need work doing when you don't looking for a quick buck ??
