engine underpowered and cutting out
#1
Hi all,  im new to the berlingo family,  i have just bought myself a 2004 berlingo van with the 1.9d engine.  it was all going well, ive had it less than a week, and ive started converting it into a camper, then tonight while driving home from the local wood suppliers (to make my bed), my van started to loose power, and not be able to go over 50mph,  then as i put my foot on the clutch and brake to enter a roundabout, the engine died and it struggled to start up again (it had started to take longer to start today, longer than usual, didnt really think anything of it, as i did a couple short trips) it started running again, started to drive off (still with power loss) then cut out again when i got to the next roundabout. i managed to get home but kept cutting out everytime i had to clutch in/brake) does anyone know what this could be, im new to these vans and have had it less than a week and only done about 60 miles in it,   its done 149,000miles and seemed to drive fine up until now (other than a bit of a heavy/stiff clutch). any help would be greatly appriciated!!

I'd start with making sure you have a clean air and fuel filter, the 1.9 is v basic so that is a positive to hold on to.

ahh thanks for the help!  without sounding stupid (im very new to these engines)   where is the fuel and air filters on these? and does this cause these running abnormalities?

Yeah i had read so many good reviews on this engine, so i found a local one owner van a little out of price range, but bit the bullet, and now its gone and done this!  just hoping it wont cost too much to fix,  have literally got £100 to last until late december!  Confused

No when i bought it, it said it had half a tank, and has only gone down slightly! (hopefully not a faulty fuel pump gauge)

If skint then remove the air filter - temporarily - and just change the fuel filter for approx £6

Both are on top and towards the front of the engine

It is rare to get a sudden loss of power due to dirty filters. I take it you had no overheats or oil light on or other symtoms?
When was the cambelt last changed? It may of jumped a tooth (in which case it should be sorted straight away before it goes completely)

Just a thought but try checking the fuel filter for water. Its part of the service procedure for this engine but if its not been done then could cause this type of problem. Its located to the right of the valve cover and very simple to do.
