Tyre Speed Rating
#1
I´m in need of some new tyres which according to the manaul for my 2.0L HDi are 185/65/15 88H.

Do I really need "H" rated tyres, which are for speeds up to 130mph?

I ask as there is a big price difference between "H" rated and "T" rated - the "T" rated ones are good for up to 118mph which is much faster than my Berlingo ( or I ) would ever go.

I normaly find V and H rated tyres are cheaper than T rated simply because there are a lot more of these tyres sold than T or even S rated.

Michelin energy tyres T rated are a tenner cheaper than H rated.

I use T rated, after all, I don't go over 70.

Thanks guys,
I´ve gone for the "T" rated Conti EcoContacts - around £20 each cheaper than the "H" rated.

I had the same thoughts when I had an XJ6. The tyres needed were Z-rated, but tall, 15" and wide. I looked at lower speed ratings as they were so much cheaper. The advice I got, and not just from tyre dealers, was that the speed rating actually covers much more than just the speed. It part its also a measure of the load (not just the weight, which does have a rating figure, the 88 in yours I think).

I think i'm correct in saying that, in the UK, a vehicle that has tyres of a lower speed rating than that recommended by the manufacturer will result in an MoT test failure......it certainly does on motorcycles!
