It won't make a jot of difference to the clutch but it will do the trans a power of good.I have drained many where the oil has started to emulsify due to condensation.That's why I change mine @ 20,000m.

Sounds like a synchro issue, probably need to learn to live with it unless under warranty.

I'll echo the oil change and bleeding advice.

No synchro on reverse geoff - oil change will make no difference to the OP fault - clutch bleed may help.

Maybe that's why it crunches then no synchro for reverse. My old focus did the same,I used to put it into 3rd first then reverse seemed to help a lot.or if I was parked say in a car park I would put it into reverse first then start the car.
