[Steering & Suspension] MOT Time...and a few jobs to do
#1
Hi Guys..Im still in the land of the living,
A quick update about "Old Smokie"...well...not any longer Im pleased to say, the smoking came from the lower rocker cover leaking oil into the exhaust manifold...new rocker cover fitted (gasket type this time) and problem solved once the manifold gasket was change..took about 4 weeks to burn out all the oil residue in the exhaust but its fine now...the deisle leaking on No 1 injector was a pin hole in the little rubber cap that fits on the leak of nipple..thats sorted and no missing at all...had a youngster take off the cam covers and check the belt...he found a sticker saying it had been changed 2000 miles earlier...same with water pump...Phew!...how lucky was I... Big Grin ...A big thanks to you guys who helped me through those issues..much appreciated,

My next task is to renew the Pin Bushes and Ball Joints on both sides..my Ball Joints are the bolt on type...Ive studied the manual about this job and it seem basicaly the same as the ball joints generaly (Just renewed all the front steering and suspension on my 96 Mercedes C280)...however Ive been told to watch for the driveshafts popping out??...obviously the wheel will be off and a trolly jack under the disc so how could the shaft pop out...fore warned and all that,

Regarding the Pin Bushes...Steel or Aluminium ??....personaly I would have thought steel but Ive never come across this before,
I will be going for Lemford parts from Eurocarparts....any advice most welcome chaps,
Regards as always,
Steve... Rolleyes

Presumably he means the track control arms ( wishbones ) .....

Personally I'd replace the whole arm rather than mess about with individual bushes ...

Driveshafts can and do " pop out " so have some containment in place just in case (drip trays ).

Thanks Gents...I did consider replacing the wishbones but the ones fitted are in quite decent condition...plus to do just the Wishbone bushes and Ball joints will only cost me £88....a pair of complete Wishbones incl ball joints and bushes will cost me £146...a good few £££`s difference...all from Eurocarparts,
Regards,
Steve...
PS...should there be a rubber pedal cover on the accelerator pedal..I bought them for the clutch and brake but the ones I can find are far too big for the gas pedal....there was nothing fitted when I got the van and it had passed its test a few months earlier

How much ? where was this price quoted from ???

I did my last van ( '55 plate 1.9d ) both sides with parts from the local motor factors for £42 inc vat

Steve take a VERY good look at the gaiters on the bottom joints in case they show signs of wear

Hi Geoff...the parts are from Eurocarparts...ball Joints £22 each and the Pin Bush £22 each...Im doing both sides of course...thanks for the heads up on the gaiters...I think I will try to price a few more factors after seeing the price you paid...Not Halfords as they get the parts from Eurocarparts...then add a bit on top...the assistant told me that when I renewed all the brakes..I save a good few £££`s that time, will let you know how I get on...the shafts popping out are a bit of a worry for me...we shall see...fingers crossed.. Regards,
Steve...

Shafts popping out - just have leak containment

Putting back in - rotate the shaft as you enter the seal rather than just pushing straight in.
