The EGR is just there to get the engine to burn some of its exhaust gases.

I can't see any reason that it would cause a Turbo problem, happy to be proved wrong though.
No chance of an egr delete damaging a turbo more likely someone had a crap map done and happened to have an egr delete done, then turbo went bang due to exhaust gas temps getting too high or turbo just dying due to 1.6hdi oil starvation and egr delete was blamed wrongly

As for what egr does, not quite right, it allows a portion of an inert gas (exhaust gas won't burn) get sucked into the cylinder and then allows a reduced amount of fuel to be added and still get burnt at correct stoichometric mixture to prevent running lean and reduce NOx emissions at idle/partial throttle loads (I'm guessing vw did this with there defeat device fitted to some engines that only activated in a straight line with the bonnet open aka test conditions)

I can't say I know much about the exact process involved in an EGR system but thanks for the extra detail.

As far as I am concerned it routes the exhaust gas which then gets burnt again.

Other than that it's all witchcraft
