Hi all !!!
Its Richard from sunny(ish) Leeds.
I have a 2014 Multispace XTR Auto 1.6eHDI engine, which I might add is a fantastic drive, handles like a dream and goes like stink. That little engine is a jewel. There are a few niggles I would like you guys thoughts on.
1> the back door windows feel very flimsy when opened. Are they safe to open when driving ?? Also the window in the tailgate, is that safe to have open when driving ???
2> The auto stop-start. Is there a known way of making it default to OFF ?? I have been on to Citroen and they say no, since it would render the vehicle less emmision efficient (not legal ??) However VW have a similar system which can be disabled by pressing and holding the switch (doesnt work on my Blingo)
3> The "ECO Mode" which limits you to 10 mins of music in "Picnic Mode" ie parked. I have decided that I am going to wire up a switched "ACC" wire to the radio and perhaps the 12V socket as well. I have a nice convenient switch blank on the right next to the auto STOP/START
switch. Has anyone done a similar mod ?? and if so are there any snags ?? Also has anyone got details of the radio wiring ie which one do I need to power up ??

I have driven both my Mk2 and Mk3 with the rear side windows open and have never had a problem.
However I would strongly advise against driving with the rear window open as it will draw the exhaust fumes into the car.
Sorry cannot help you with items 2 and 3.

Don't be scared of stop/start, it's great once you get used to it.

I find it weird on the odd occasion that it doesn't stop - usually when the heater or ac are needed.

It's got the fastest, quietest restart I've ever known.

The potential problem I could see with powering the radio is that its power may branch off to lots of other things. So by powering it you may be enabling other things in ways in which it's not designed for. E.g. if the airbag gets its power but doesn't have its "don't explode" signal - boom.

Thanks for that !! Yes I was thinking of using a blocking diode (1N4001 or similar) to prevent a back feed.

It may not be as simple as that, as the power may cross-connect via other connections - not just the obvious mains wiring. For example, lots of logic chips have diodes from their inputs and outputs to their power rails to prevent static damage. The unexpected consequence of this is that supplying a logic high to a chip that's unpowered can actually power it and the system it's part of via its internal protection diode. When this happens, the current draw along logic lines can damage it and other connected systems.

You may get away with it, but there's a lot of potential for unexpected things happening or electrical damage.

Hi Richard

I've got the same vintage bingo as you.

With the windows I get the same as you they sure seem flimsy, however after 1000s miles driving around Europe with them open over very rough roads, you have nothing to worry about. At speed the wind pressure kind of keeps them stable.

There's no way to turn off the Eco mode unfortunately, however as others have said you will get used to it. It's not using the starter motor like on most other cars so it seems very robust to me.

And the Eco mode, again no way as standard to turn that off in afraid!

Yes I have to admit that the Stop/Start does work very quietly. and doesnt gnash etc, but my worries are the wear and tear of the starter under Leeds town conditions ie continuous stop, move 10', stop again and so on.........
OK on the windows. I have 2 dogs so am thinking of extra ventilation at motorway speeds. Have you tried that with yours ?? 
Hoping that you are OK with that ???

I find myself switching off stop/start when it's a bit trafficy. In those situations I also put it into neutral when I come to a standstill. I'm new to any sort of automatics and coming from manual driving the turn of a knob to neutral is no hardship compared to gear levers and pedals.
However stop/start will remain in on normal driving conditions where you eventually arrive at a traffic light and stop for a minute.

It doesn't use the starter at all - it's much, much cleverer. It's a "micro-hybrid" - it stores electrical energy in a supercapacitor (a short-term battery, in effect) using regenerative braking while you're slowing, then uses this recovered energy to spin the alternator. An alternator can also work as a motor, but it needs a higher voltage than 12V, which is what the supercapacitor's for.

So it actually generates very little stress on anything. It's also pretty clever - if the heater or air con are working hard to either heat or cool you then it keeps running.

It's also extremely fast - I don't think it's possible to move your foot from the brake to accelerator before it's running again. Plus it even keeps the brake on if you're going up a steep hill.

I've heard stop/start systems on a Fiat 500 and a very posh Audi coughing like a 40-a-day smoker when restarting, but our lowly vans-with-windows have a far superior system.

Be aware that it will go into neutral if waiting in "A" for more than a few minutes. In which case, you need to select "N" then "A" again to go back into gear. If you want it to remain stopped on the handbrake without holding the footbrake but it in neutral before letting go of the footbrake.

It's a seriously clever bit of kit - the sort of thing you'd have only found on a top-end luxury car not many years ago. So don't worry about it - you soon stop getting instinctively worried when it stops!

Thanks for that. I must admit I never would have guessed at the Alternator  !!!
I have just retired after working with Fords for about 15 years, and their system is archaic in comparison ie Battery and Starter Motor. Oh well I suppose I might leave the system switched on more......
I have just ordered some Osram Nightbreaker headlight bulbs to replace the factory fitted candles at the front (as a treat for the girl). They should be arriving today. Access looks a lot easier than my Berlingo camper van that I had last year........
