You didn't mention that in your original post. Armchair diagnostics are difficult at the best of times, more so if you are not in possesion of all the facts.
Fuel drainback is less likely, but still an outside possibility if the seals are age hardenedand don't quite seal when cold.
Think I would start elsewhere first.

In a simple diesel such as the 1.9, you only need heat, air and fuel for it to run properly.

HEAT is generated by engine compression with some initial help from the glow plugs.
Problems can be- Not enough engine cranking speed to generate heat / Not enough compression-worn rings or valves not seating properly incorrect cam timing so compression escapes, or glowplug problems.

AIR- Blocked air inlet, filter or exhaust.

FUEL- Not being injected at correct time (timing) Not atomising correctly, poor spray pattern / low injector pressure (hosing) or no fuel (air in system) faulty stop solonoid. Faulty injector pump

A few of the above can be eliminated by seeing if it runs normally once started leaving you to work through the rest. Various bits of the above can be tested quite simply, eg a compression test will reveal low compression which will prove or disprove the valve clearances before you strip everything out.
If compression OK then valve timing, valve clearance and worn rings can be ticked off the list

Most definitely !!!!

Memory tells me the pipe is 8mm O/D but wouldn't swear to it ..... call in a motor factors and buy a length of fuel hose they sell it in a variety of sizes, the temp repair can then be a permanent one.

I always say that folks should undertake the " free " work first before spending any money and checking the clearances falls into that category.

It is all too easy to spend money in the hope that the " spend " will fix the problem and with cold starting issues the usual leap of faith spends are firstly the glow plugs only to find that the problem remains and secondly the glow plug relay and again the problem remains.

Buy a new battery mate that'll fix it is another rallying cry that often fails to solve the problem and again a free check can be made by going to a garage or even by doing it yourself.

Buy a new starter motor mate that'll fix it is the ultimate solution it would appear but no that isn't always the case.

So with all of the above the poor chap spending the money will be short of £200 just on parts and god help him if he has to be paying a garage to do the work as he would need a mortgage ! .. Ok perhaps not a mortgage but it could easily be more than the vehicle is worth.

To the original poster, the non return may or may not be a red herring but you can check it out by pumping the primer before starting when cold and see how that works, somehow I doubt it is affecting things as the starting is reported to be fine even after many hours.

Just my thoughts and experiences ..... I'll probably upset some folks by saying so.
Perhaps I should just keep quiet and let people spend money when they don't need to ?

I call this the *poke & hope* method of diagnostics. Nothing beats doing it properly. For all we know, it may already have an uprated starter fitted.
