Horrific engine noise
#1
Afternoon all.
This morning I was quite happily cruising down the dual carriageway in my 52 plate 1.9d berlingo until I came up the slip road and off it. The silence in between tracks on the stereo brought me to the attention on the most horrific engine noise I have ever heard ( and I've own a Subaru that started knocking)! It sounded like it had no oil in! I nursed the poor thing home lacking power. Finally got home and I can't remember if I stalled it or it cut out as I was in abit of a flap to get it on the drive. Tried to restart it, stone dead, wouldn't turn over( at this point I'm thinking the engine has seized up) few seconds later I tried again it turned over, coughed and spluttered so I buried my foot and got it going again. Parked it up and now the horrific noise has gone!!!! I have fired it up several times in the last few hours and the horrific noise has gone! Has anybody else experienced this or something simlar cuz I'm about stumped with this.

Any help would be great

Thanks

 Will

If all you say is right & peace is restored,I can only assume & I hate assumptions, that something like a dirty injector has stuck & overfuelled 1 cyl. Is the fuel filter clean?Have you drained water from  it recently?Start simple & run some fuel cleaner through it(As recommended by Doofer.Hehe).Dose a Half tank or so with a fulll dose & run it to low & see what happens.Use branded & not S/market fuel.

Always use shell fuels. I am yet to look at the fuel filter, had a new one in it in April.

Check your inlet manifold, the egr system can clog these pretty badly. otherwise id think a blocked fuel line or alike, or even the gauze on the tank- if there is something (sludge, rust etc) that's got sucked into the gauze while driving, and then settled again when parked that would starve you of diesel.
