Yes. It's the small bush in that rear engine mount.

It might "look" ok but it will be the issue.  If you really want to check it, you'll need to get the car up on ramps, lie underneath it with a crowbar or similar and lever the engine mount so it's solid while someone you trust revs the engine a bit. You'll see and hear the difference with and without the bar jamming the bush solid. In my experience there only needs to be the slightest amount of play in this bush and it will move.

Literally the only one that hasn't been done! im not convinced though, since the gearstick still seems to wobble when out of gear and coasting along... I would have expected if it was that mount, the knocking would stop when the clutch isn't engaged. I'm working tomorrow and monday but plan is call my usual mechanic and have him look at it on tuesday all being well.

absolute pain in the arse!

The engine will still move and the gearlever wobble whether it's in gear or not if that mount is knackered. You can probably get it do it in neutral when stopped still if you try.

I like your confidence, I will be very happy if that is all thats up, it really feels awful at the moment! Would the engine feeling solid when rocked from the top still support your suggestion? I've had a bar in around it before but it's not easy to get leverage on the smaller bush and I was also on my own at the time..

Oh yes for sure. There's no way you'll move it by hand and it will appear solid from the top. I'm confident because I had all the same frustration as you with mine, and I've been through all these steps.

On mine the little bush looked fine and hardly moved at all. It was only when we jammed the crowbar in the gap so there was no way it could move, the noise and wobbly lever stopped immediately.

Also - we had a press so changed the bush ourselves, but because I didn't tighten it right up on refitting, it still made the wobble and noise, so make sure it's torqued correctly on reassembly.

Oh, you'll have to get the bar in the lower bush from beneath.. you jam it between the two parts of the bush to hold it solid, then the noise will go away.

Aye i've no press and i'm so tired of it i'll be taking it over to teh garage on tuesday in the hope its a cheap fix as you say. I'll make sure to post here and report if it gets sorted, it wuld be a shame to loose all the info if anyone ever has the same problem...

The bush is £16 from the dealer. You don't need to buy the whole mounting, just the bush, if your mechanic has a press.

oh god, booked it into the garage today, took it for a run after dinner as the run home from work felt pretty normal, the knocking has almost stoped, and there is still a slight back/forward vibration through the gear stick but it's definately not as bad as it was last night when i thought the van wouldnt make it home (couldn't go over 40 or it was THUMPING)

it's booked in so ill bring it over and have the bush changed and ask him to check the cv joints wheel bearings and suspension while he has it

its just typical isn't it? when i have time to bring it to someone it stops happening! I wonder has the bush got worse and is sitting differant after all the vibration/knocking/thumping last night, anyway wish me luck for tomorrow! I want to start spending time making a bed for the back of it rather than on keeping it going ...
