[Engine] Starting issue bsi ecu or something else
#1
Some of you might remember the saga of my 02 1.9d... Cambelt slipped and damaged the engine. I brought a good running engine from another berlingo and transfered it in along with new clutch, cambelt, water pump. I used the original fuel pump as I understood it's coded. See was very very hard to start and would only run for a few seconds... After further investigation it appeared to be a problem with the pump. As I had the one from the donor car I cut the back off and replaced the stop solenoid with a universal one... This is where things got funny.
If I run a power lead direct from the battery to the solenoid the car starts first turn and runs fine... If I try using the live feed from the original solenoid wires it won't.
Also now I have it running the dash is doing all manner of weird things... Speedo moves with ignition on and beeps. It also follows the rev counter and then drops and beeps. Random warning lights flicker or dim.
So... I can easily figure out a way to bypass the solenoid control but can't really live without a decent dash and Speedo... Where do I go from here?
Cheers
Jim

Hi Jim

You need to retrace your wiring as the solenoid is s designed to switch off once the engin is started. It would appear from what you are saying that the feed is permanent live .This will most definitely try and find another route to earth itself out...

I would suggest a Fault code reader to find out what the ECU is thinking

if the diesel injector pump stop solenoid switched off after starting the engine would stop.

ours is wired to the supply to the reversing light switch on the gearbox,  its an ignition switched supply , goes on and off with the key.

i would check that the old unused solenoid wires are separatly wrapped in insulating tape so they arnt shorting out, then check all the earths , underbonnet ones first as theyre relitavly easy to get at ... are there any behind the dash itself?  and generally check all the connections to the bsi are clean and dry.  ours were covered in engine oil from an engine blow up when we got the car, which seemed to be the cause of a few odd electrical gremlins.

Maybe I should rephrase that The voltage is reduced when the vehicle starts it still appears to me that this is and Earth issue and as Nicc says it is probably covered or soak in old Oil

Afternoon all.
Well the mention of earth's got me thinking. Ive had the engine out, changed pumps etc etc so to see what the earth's were doing I ran two jumper cables from the engine block to the battery and hey presto all the faults disappeared. So I've got at least one dodgy earth... Shouldn't be hard to find...
Thanks for the thoughts!
Looks like the cars getting a reprieve... It was a gnats dangles from the scrapper...

no it's a straight forward ignition feed, shouldn't drop out at any point if the ignition is on...
