Disconnnect the battery before touching any wires.
Or run the risk of blowing a fuse and the car not starting.
And yes I have done that twice.
Once when putting my Sony Head Unit in and again when taking it out.
I have now put the standard Citroen Head Unit back in
I would recommend having a look on the Connect2 website for wiring harness adapters.
If you search the forum you can find the right one for your car, from memory it's the one for the Xsara Picasso rather than the Berlingo one, at least it is for my 2007 model, and then you will be able to use the column stalk controls if fitted.

they a bit of a nightmare some of mine just a case of switching the red/yellow round as stated but the radio dosent shut down until the bsi does when you lock the van and the miliage readout ect goes off ,usually after a few minutes other shut down with the key yet wont hold memory seems the vans are hit and miss but so are some radios lol
