Winter Tyre Sizes

Hi,
I have a 1.6Hdi XTR Mk 3 with original Michelin 215/55R16 tyres on. Can I get the existing tyres off the rims and fit my Winter tyres; 205/55R16 Michelin Alpens (off a Focus)?
I'm not sure whether the 205 tyres would be too narrow for the steel rims.
Can't really afford new Winter tyres, the prices seem extortionate this year.

they will only be 10mm narrower but also they will be 11mm smaller in diameter, it wouldn't stop me fitting them.

Fitting winter tyres is not classed as a modification but fitting different sized tyres may well be for insurance purposes also tyres must not be lower speed or load rating than manufacturer spec, I think. So worth checking all this.

my winter tyres are 195/70r15 mud and snow, my summer ones on alloys are std mitchelin 205/55r15`s
I have not had any comments from police stop and check over tyres, My winter on on original steel wheels fitted by Citroen The only down side of them is they are noisier, just fitted them 2 days ago ready for snows.....snow chains ready to go as well. JUUST need the snow......ha ha considered it better to fit in sunshine than in ice cold freezing conditions....gives my summer tyres a longer life too.

What winter tyres do you use? mine are michelin alpin and are no noisier, they do seem to tram line a little though over my summer tyres which are michelin energy.

You have the Winter tyres at the back?
I'm hoping to put my Alpins at the front, I know your supposed to have four but can't afford a full set. Anyway I could stand the fishtailing last year, particularly as it reminded me how slippy the roads were.

sumer are micheli energy [std fit] winter vanco 4 season mud and snow, used to use them on my VW Westfalia camper , dropping from 17" down to 15 " for winter conditions, so a perfect for my berlingo.

all 4 are winter tyres.

all 4 of mine are winter tyres also. I have read two are better than none but 4 are best for performance and best grip.

Ok have got the Alpins on the front no problem, now for the rear wheels.
I'm looking at some Wintertact re-treads from Germany on mytyres.co.uk and it is showing two possibilities, I don't know what the XL refers to, can anyone suggest which one is correct?
I've got a Berlingo Mk3 1.6 hdi XTR with 215/55/16 rims.
