Replacing rear speakers in Modutop 2004 Berlingo

Hi All,

Well, I've replaced the front door speakers and tweeters in the car last weekend, and it's now much better. The ones in the modutop at the back are still rubbish though - has anyone replaced these in their Berlingo, and if so, what size are they , and how difficult a job was it? Any pointers? I have a horrid feeling the entire assembly might have to be removed..

I've changed mine.

They are easy to do, but better speakers have a bigger magnet so they are a tighter squeeze. There are a few torx screws holding in the casing for each speaker. Undo those and there are two screws holding the speaker in situ. You will again need the connectors for new speaker to fit the citroen plug.

They are 4 inch speakers, so if you swap them for something better they are likely to be 25 to 30 watt output, but as I said bulky at the back.

I used some new screws that were longer as the originals were too short. I then put them in place and got the casing back on.

The alternative is to hack away and the plastic at the back so they can be recessed further in so they will fit.

tucker - which speakers did you get? I've searched the ICE shops around me continuously to find speakers with small enough magnets which mean I wont have to hack away at the berlingo! HELP!

I put in some Sony ones I had:

These did have much bigger magnets on them, as you can see from the picture.

But, if you use longer screws to re-fit them, you probably won't need to adapt the housing at all. I squeezed these in without hacking anything, but used different screws to secure them.

I had an annoying buzzing coming from my rear speakers, so I decided to break out the socket set and investigate.

It was easy enough to remove 4x torx and get the speaker grill moulding thingy off. On careful inspection of the speaker I found a tear in the soft edge ring that joins the paper cone to the edge of the unit.

I decided to stick a blob of glue onto it to stop it flapping and buzzing, and after it had dried, I put it back in place but kept the grill off for the time being.

It seems to have stopped the buzzing, and there's a LOT more treble and clarity without all that plastic in the way! I'm going to take the moulding off the other side too, and hope the kids don't poke them... the sound is MUCH better! I might wrap some black fabric - an old sock or something - around them to keep dust and insects out.

A tweak in the mid-range cuts out the harshness, and a large boost in the upper treble goes some way to actually getting some treble through the FM link.

If the glue repair doesn't last, can anyone recommend new speakers to replace them? I'm still using the factory-supplied head unit, fed from an MP3 player and FM transmitter, which sounds suprisingly good after careful tweaking of the EQ on the player (boosting the upper bass and throttling back the low bass which you just can't hear well in a moving car so it achieves nothing but upsets the speakers).

I can still feel satisfying bass from the door panels if I lean my knee against it while driving, the treble clarity was lacking but it's much improved without the rear speaker grills and the front/rear fader set to R2.

The mp3 player is a Sansa clip with 1200 tracks on it so far, clips nicely to the sun visor with all the FM transmitter and power feed gubbins hidden away in the Modutop above my head (power comes from one of the 12v sockets up in the modutop - which isn't ignition-switched, so I've got an inline switch from an old table-lamp flex stuck in place with blu-tack which I have to reach up and switch each time, LOL, even though the transmitter has an auto-power-off I feel happier removing the power myself).

Well, delayed reply, but thanks for that. I've just purchased a pair of the later version of these speakers - Sony XS-F1037SE. New set, £16.99 off ebay inc postage :-)

I'll let you know how they fit in..

Well, they fit in perfectly, see picture. The magnets are larger, but you can bend 2 of the 4 screw flanges back. and simply use the original screws to fit the speakers in as per the pic.

Job done, £17. Sounds miles better.
