Steering problem 1.9D Forte. Any ideas ???
#1
hey all..

I'm still trying to work out a steering problem with my 2001 Berlingo. I bought this van cheap a few weeks ago and only noticed the problem on the way home (didn't have insurance for a proper test drive).

Well, it's most apparent when taking left hand bends/corners. The car will turn in ok but there is a wobble and the steering wheel is fighting to straighten up. Something is definitely not right..It feels very unsafe. It feels fine at low speeds though.

I have changed both ball joints, anti-roll bar links and track rod ends and the problem is still there.

Everything looks straight and tight under there. There is no problem when driving in a straight line.

The suspension isn't sagging and seems to work well. The tyres are the correct pressure and feel balanced.

Any ideas ???

Also, can anyone tell me what the all the dashboard warning lights are ??? I don't have an owners manual and they're not in the Haynes.

It's a 2001 Multispace 1.9D Forte.

Thanks, Ed

Its not uncommon and to my knowledge no one has cured it. Both my bingos have done it and changing the steering rack and pump doesnt seem to make a difference either. If you do a search there are other posts on it. I don't notice it anymore.

You would REALLY notice this... It's quite severe.

It feels like the wheel is going to fall off.

Have you checked for a broken spring? Cant remember whether the original fault was with mk1 or mk 2 motors but the ends break, there was a recall that involved a cup arrangement being fitted to the base of the spring to prevent the tyre being punctured if it did fail. I'm sure you might have noticed while you were doing the drop links etc.

Thanks for the link.. unfortunately, I can't find the info in any of those manuals. My dash lights are different to what they show..

The warning light I get is an orange/red bulb. It looks like a coiled spring (kind of). It only flashes for a millisecond so it's hard to make out..

coiled spring light - could be the coolant level.

Coiled spring is the glow plugs

The glow plugs are switched on automatically only if the temperature is low enough that they are required. When they are on the light is also on and when the light goes out then you can start the engine.

I had a broken n/s spring on mine which made a clonk when on a hard lock - a new spring has been fitted but there is still a similar, occasional wobble on the steering - I would normally put down to tramlining /road surface.

However todays MOT was passed with an advisory "Slight play in Nearside tie rod to steering rack joint".....
